By negligently discarding plastic, especially plastic water bottles, fishing gear and plastic bags, people are unknowingly causing the deaths of millions of mammals, fish, birds and reptiles every year. We defile the face of the earth with plastic refuse.

Since the invention of plastic earlier this century, it has become a popular material used in a wide variety of unique and innovative applications. Plastic is used to make, or wrap around, many of the items we buy or use. The problem comes when we no longer want these items and how we dispose of them, particularly the throwaway plastic material used in wrapping or packaging. Plastic is accessible, lightweight and quickly discarded. Too quickly discarded.

Plastics are utilized because they are easy and inexpensive to manufacture, tough and durable. Unfortunately these same useful qualities make plastic an overwhelming pollution problem. Inferior quality and low cost means plastic is readily discarded. Plastics require over 300 years to photo degrade. Its long life assures it survives in the environment for extended periods where it can do great harm. Because plastic does not easily decompose and requires high energy ultra-violet light to break down, the volume of plastic waste in the world’s oceans is steadily growing. Plastic is now found in virtually all the oceans and rivers of the world, even the most unexploited and once pristine.

Charles Moore, an American oceanographer, reports the volume of plastic pollution in the worlds oceans is so extensive it’s beyond cleaning up. A toxic plastic mass of refuse double the size of Texas swirls in the waters of the Pacific Ocean between San Francisco and Hawaii. There the crew found that test samples contained six parts of plastic for every part plankton, with a five-fold increase in the amount of plastic between 1997 and 2007.

Annually in excess of 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. That is an unconscionable amount of waste, so much that more than one million bags are used every minute and their impact on the planet is devastating. Plastic bags are only part of the problem. America alone, produces in excess of 800,000 tons of plastic bottle pollution every year, and the amount is growing. World-wide the earth is defiled with over 100 million tons of plastic pollution every year.

The California Costal Commission reports that over 80 per cent of debris within waterways, most of it being plastic, originates on land rather than being generated by boats.

Deadly plastic pollution affects marine wildlife in various ways: entangling and trapping creatures and by being eaten. Turtles are particularly threatened by plastic pollution. Seven of the world’s turtle species are already endangered or threatened for a host of reasons. Turtles become entangled in fishing nets, and many sea turtles have been found dead with plastic garbage bags in their stomachs. Studies indicate turtles mistake these floating semi-transparent bags for jellyfish and eat them. The turtles die an inhumane death from choking or from being unable to eat. A dead turtle found off the coast Hawaii was found to have more than 1000 pieces of plastic in its stomach including part of a comb, a toy truck wheel and lank of nylon rope.

There is great environmental concern about the effect of plastic trash on all marine mammals. These elegant creatures are already under threat for a variety of other reasons: e.g. seal and whale populations have been decimated by unregulated hunting. A recent study concluded that in excess of 100,000 marine mammals die unnecessarily each year as a result of plastic pollution.

Worldwide over 100 bird species are known to ingest plastic. This includes more than 35 species located off the coast of South Africa. A recent study of blue petrel hatchlings at South Africa’s remote Marion Island showed that 90 per cent of the baby chicks examined had plastic in their digestive systems, apparently fed to them accidentally by their parents. South Africa seabirds are the highest affected seabird population in the world. Plastics remain in the birds’ digestive systems, stopping digestion and resulting in starvation.

Scientific reports are not complete about how much plastic birds and fish are ingesting, however scientist agree that plastic toxins in seafood are likely to be harmful when eaten by humans. Plastic is compared with toxic materials such as mercury. Plastic acts like an absorbent sponge when in contact with poisons such as PCBs, concentrating them at levels that are millions of time more toxic than those found in uncontaminated in seawater.

The ingredients in plastic have been linked to cancer and reproductive deformaties. Bisphenol A, found in plastic water bottles, has been shown to produce cancer in lab rats, to interrupt hormone levels and is associated with diabetes and obesity.

Scientific studies also cause concerns that the massive swirls of floating plastic could contribute to global warming by creating a thick shady canopy that makes it difficult for plankton and plant life to sustain growth.

Let’s look at a few ways where together we can make a difference. The crisis of plastic pollution demands urgent study and action. Business should be encouraged to reduce the amount of plastic used in packaging and to recycle. Plastic wrapping and bags should be required to carry a warning label advising of the dangers of plastic pollution and shoppers should be encouraged to use earth friendly shopping bags of organic, natural materials or recycled plastic fibers. Please write and lobby our law makers. The situation only continues to escalate. We must take action now!

Support re-cycling programs and promote environmental awareness in your local community. Be pro active in asking governments to make changes and consumers to rethink their attitudes. Set an example to your family, friends, fellow workers and neighbors. Volunteer for neighborhood clean up projects, be involved. Purchase products that minimize the amount of plastic packaging and inform store management why you are doing so. Together we can speak with a loud voice when we speak with our dollars.

Choose to drink tap or carbon filtered water from a glass-lined reusable container. If you do purchase plastic bottles, dispose of the container properly. Please recycle.

Increasing environmental awareness points out that it is obvious that there is more that we can do to create a sustainable planet. If every one of us would take a few tiny steps, make a few different choices and consciously consider our impact on the planet, we could find a way to restore the world to its original beauty, purity and resources.

Do you want to live in a way that protects thefuture of our children? Do you wish to live in the greenest world possible with a conscience, respect and appreciation for the environment?

Most Americans have a strong sense of social and environmental responsibility. We attempt to make environmentally wise choices in all aspects of our daily living, yet we ignore one of the major contributors to the plight of the planet.

Worldwide in excess of one billion people do not have an uncontaminated source of clean drinking water, this is in excess of 1/6 of the world population, yet we, as Americans, spend billions of dollars yearly for the convenience of drinking from a plastic bottle instead of a water tap. Shame on us.

1.5 million tons of plastic are used to manufacture bottled water every year. It also takes in excess of 25 times the amount of water to make each plastic bottle than the bottle contains. 300 million gallons of bottled water are imported to the United States yearly.

In America bottled water is often simply an indulgence. Despite our justifications, it is not a harmless indulgence. Bottled water is an environmental catastrophe. Thirty years ago bottled water barely survived as a business in the United States. Today Americans spent more on “designer” bottled water than we spent on iPods or entertainment tickets - $15 billion in 2007. The expected United States expenditure for bottled water will be $16 billion a year before the end of the decade.

As a country we consume more than 30 billion single-serving bottles of water per year. Bottled water is the fastest growing beverage industry in the world, worth up to $22 billion a year. Less than 15% of plastic bottles are recycled, the rest end up in the refuse systems and cost America’s cities over 70 million per year to handle clean up and landfill expenditures. America yearly produces in excess of 800,000 tons of plastic bottle pollution that substantially magnifies global warming.

Last year, Americans threw away 38 billion plastic water bottles, about $1 billion worth of plastic. That’s an overwhelming waste, especially considering 1.5 million barrels of oil - enough to power 100,000 cars for a year - were consumed to manufacture these bottles. And that’s not even including the oil and gas required for shipping and delivering this massive volume of liquid.

If you are putting money into bottled water, you are basically purchasing plastic, which is manufactured from petroleum. When we buy a bottle of water, what we’re often purchasing is the bottle its self. One of the main problems with bottled water production is the reliance on fossil fuels. From packaging to transportation, bottled water relies on oil, using 17 million barrels of oil and producing massive amounts of carbon dioxide every year.

In the United States alone, we are hauling 1 billion liters of water around a week in trains, trucks, railcars and ships. That adds up to a weekly giant convoy equivalent to 37,800 18-wheelers. Water weighs over 8 pounds a gallon. Water is so very heavy you cannot fill an 18 wheeler with bottled water, you have to allow empty space.

There is an simple eco friendly solution. Tap water is considerably less expensive. As an investigative reporter for the NY Times points out, almost all municipal water in America is so good that nobody needs to import a single bottle from Italy or France or the Fiji Islands.

Clean and pure drinking water should be public and inexpensive. The more the wealthy opt out of drinking tap water, the less political support and funds there will be for investing in developing, maintaining and repairing America’s public water supply. That would be a dreadful loss.

Availability of inexpensive, pure water is basic to a countrys health. In Fiji, a state-of-the-art factory spins out more than a million bottles a day of the hippest bottled water on the American market, yet more than half the people in Fiji do not have a pure or dependable source of drinking water. This means it is easier for an American in Dallas or Boston to quench their thirst with refreshing Fiji water than it is for the majority of people in Fiji.

Should you elect to get your suggested eight to ten glasses a day from bottled water, you may spend up to $1,500 or more every year. An equal amount of tap water would cost pennies a day. Recent studies show that many brands of bottled water fail to meet industry guidelines and the cost of even poor quality bottled water can grow quite high.

Much of bottled water is only plain tap water. Many bottled water firms repackage tap water into plastic bottles, then sell them back to the consumer at prices higher than gasoline and increasing just as rapidly. Aquafina, as an example, has finally been pressured into amending its labels to advise consumers that Aquafina water comes from tap water. Why not just drink tap water? More than a quarter of bottled water is just processed tap water.

Plastic containers poisonous toxic chemicals. Have you considered why your plastic bottle of water has added a label warning telling you not to reuse it? The longer you continue to use that bottle, the more likely it is to leach toxic chemicals into your drinking water.

There is a to solve the dilemma. If you are unsure of your local water supply or wish to easily filter tap water when on the go, carbon-filtered tap water is safer and costs much less than bottled water. As reported by the Environmental Working Group, carbon filtration of tap water will dramatically lower levels of toxic by products; it is also 10 to 20 times less expensive than bottled water, and does not produce the waste and pollution associated with the packaging and transport of bottled water.

A portable water filter is a perfect solution for water filtration on the go. A portable water filter allows anyone to filter their own water, no matter where they travel; across town or around the world. A portable water filter allows you to free yourself from any unpleasant taste, additives or contaminates while protecting the environment and your pocketbook. Get the whole family involved. A five member family could save well over $7,500.00 a year.

Stop being unwitting victims of manipulative advertising. When a entire industry is built up by overwhelming us with a product we do not need, when an entire industry is based on packaging and presentation, not the product, it is worth asking how that happened and what the future impact is upon our precious planet.

Many people are electing to avoid the risk of chemical contamination of their bodies, families and homes. Fortunately, solutions for addressing change exist and are readily available. Choosing eco-friendly products allows us to live a natural, green lifestyle.

The benefits of organic bedding, choosing organic foods and wearing organic apparel are numerous.

Organic Foods

The Organic Food Association tells us: It iss common sense; organic food is good food. Good to eat, good for the environment, good for the small scale farmers and farm workers who grow it.

Organic farming is all about health and wellness. In order to assure optimum health and resistance against diseases, the natural balance in our own bodies and in the environment must be maintained. The use of artificial fungicides, chemical pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and genetic engineering interfere with this delicate balance; with unknown and often harmful consequences! Organic farming affects more than what can be tasted or seen.

Over the previous fifty years, commercial farmers have, of necessity, continued to increase the amount of these hazardous applications. Cereal crops are sprayed as many as 8 times during the growing season. Many fruit and vegetable harvests have been sprayed 10 to 15 times. Following the harvest the spraying process is repeated to prevent grow of bacteria during storage and transport. Excessive spraying of fruit and vegetable crops destroys natural bacteria, leaving the plants increasingly vulnerable to attack from unwelcome pests or disease. More insecticides and fungicides are then required to fight off infestation and decay. However, these pests rather quickly become immune to the chemicals applied and their population rapidly grows. More powerful and increasingly toxic chemicals are then required to contain the infestation.

Organic certification is the consumers assurance that products have met stringent standards and have been grown and processed according to strict procedures without contamination from carcinogenic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, human waste or sewage sludge and that they were processed without ionizing radiation or artificial food additives. Organic or non organic, which would you rather put in your body? We are what we eat. When our diet is built upon natural organic choices we are providing our bodies optimum food, produced in optimum conditions. Organically raised vegetables and fruit provide more minerals and nutrients than commercially grown produce and are more intensely endowed with flavor, color and aroma; they just taste better!

Organic meat is the only meat that guarantees that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have not been used at any stage of growth production. Certified organic meats are produced from animals that have been reared humanely and feed on certified organic pastures and feeds

Organics And The Environment

The USDA estimates that within the next ten years over half of all Americas farm products will come from only 1% of the farms. The EPA also states that commercial agriculture is accountable for 70% of the pollution in our country’s rivers and streams. Small scale organic farmers finance innovative and far reaching research designed to reduce agricultures impact on the environment. They maintain bio diversity by planting heirloom varieties of plants and gleaning seeds for future crops. The loss of a substanial variety of species is one of the worlds most pressing environmental concerns. The good news is that many organic farmers and gardeners have been harvesting, preserving seeds and growing unusual and unique varieties for decades.

Organic farming methods naturally enrich the soil with manure and compost. Well balanced soils product healthy, strong plants, nourishing for both people and animals. Organic agriculture can be a lifeline for small farms as it offers an alternative market where sellers can receive fair and equatable prices for their crops. Organic farming may be one of the last ways to assure the survival of both our ecosystems and our rural farming communities .

Conventional farming practices endanger workers and their families. Scientific research confirms pesticide related health problems which include cancer, birth defects, memory loss, paralysis and death. Unsecured storage, improper application methods and unsafe handling and transportation procedures are not at all uncommon and often lead to tragic mishaps. As pests develop resistance, farmers desperate to maintain or increase crop yields often resort to repeated applications of expensive and stronger chemical products. Faced with increasing costs, depleted fields and contaminated ground water, several small farmers have been forced to abandon their livelihood.

Organic farming is safer and healthier for farm workers, but also promotes just compensation in the supply chain. Organic farming provides a viable and socially acceptable alternative to large-scale farming and the accompanying dependence on government crop subsidies. Support of the small organic farmer supports Americas economy.

Organic production substantially reduces health risks. Many EPA-approved pesticides were registered and approved prior to extensive research that linked these hazarous chemicals to cancer and other significant medical problems. Crop dusting has often resulted in drifts of toxic pesticides and herbicides from fields to residential areas.

Organic agriculture is one of the best ways to prevent more of these chemicals from contaminating the ecosystem. An increasing body of research indicates that chemical contaminants are considerably more prevalent in the foods we eat, in our bodies and in the environment than we previously believed.

By choosing organic products we lessen this toxic burden. Organic farmers rotate crops and plant soil enriching cover crops to control weeds, nutrient leaching and erosion. Soil is the foundation of the food chain. The point of organic farming is to use methods that build and maintain healthy and sustainable soils.

Organic Skin Care And Personal Products

Skin care and cosmetics are the least regulated products under the US Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Whether it is soap, moisturizers or deodorants, skin care products are an essential part of daily life. Do we really understand what these products actually contain and what we are forcing our skin to absorb?

Have you ever suffered from burning, stinging or itchy skin? it is likely your skin absorbed irritants and toxins from your skin care products. The skin absorbs ingredients in all the personal care products that come in contact with our skin. Consider nicotine or HRT patches. They rely totally on skin absorption.

As parents we are concerned for the well being of our children. We tenderly comfort and bathe them with a wide range of products. These include soaps, shampoos, creams and lotions, many of which are applied to babys delicate skin several times a day. The skin is the largest organ of the body and the skin of an infant can be up to 100 times more sensitive and receptive to toxic chemicals and irritating ingredients that the skin of an adult.

Without even realizing, mothers put their babies at risk daily. Did you know that applying powder to your babys skin may pose a cancer risk later in life? The principle ingredient in many baby powders is talc, which several medical studies have confirmed as a known carcinogenic.

Lanolin is a featured ingredient in many skin care products. When processed from organically raised sheep, lanolin is a wonderful healing balm. The danger lies in non organic lanolin that has been acquired from sheep that were dipped or sprayed for lice with chemical pesticides that are contaminated with carcinogenic ingredients such as DDT, dieldrin or lindane. The residue of these toxic chemicals remains in the processed lanolin and can cause severe reactions and long lasting health concerns.

Chemical free and all natural, organic products offer eco-friendly options that eliminate these dangers. You can avoid these and similar safely risks by using only certified organic products formulated from natural sources such as plants, fruits, vegetables and flowers. These products to do not contain synthetic chemicals such as lauryl sulphate, phthales, parabens, artificial fragrances or dyes.

Organic Textiles

By the end of 2008, the sale of organic textiles worldwide is expected to exceed $3 billion. Global demand for organic textiles is increasing in response to consumer demand. Organic production takes additional time, requires more skills and knowledge and costs somewhat more. But it is worth it. Organic materials do not bear hidden costs to the environment.

Choose Eco Wise Products! Choose Organic!

The consumption and use of green technologies is all about the challenges and choices we face if we are to continue to enjoy a high quality of life within the finite resources of our planet. If we become passionate about sustainability, together we can help make the planet a cleaner and healthier place for all of us to live.

Do you want to embrace a lifestyle that protects our childrens future? Do you desire to to live in the greenest environment possible with a conscience and respect and appreciation for the earth that sustains us? The quality of life for decades ahead is dependent on the choices we make today!

Polls reflect that about a fourth of the US adult population has a profound sense of environmental enlightenment and social responsibility. Almost half of us will buy organic and make earth friendly choices in many aspects of our daily living. Consumer awareness and education are a powerful force for change.

The consumption of organically raised products has grown by 20 per cent in the last year alone. Organic alternatives are readily available and the trend is escalating. Sustainability should be within everyones reach. Our choices matter and have a long term global impact. Let us decide to choose wisely!

Since prehistoric times, raw gold with its radiant golden coloration and metallic glean has captivated and fascinated mankind. The unique luster of gold attracts the eye, allowing the seeker to detect the smallest of grains in an mixture of many other materials. The smallest grains are easily detected.

Anthropological excavations of Stone Age burial sites indicate that gold was the first element collected and prized by man. This unique metal, gathered in the form of nuggets, seems to have been highly prized but was not used in practical applications. Rating 2.5 ? 3 on Mohs scale of hardness, gold was much too pliable to be hammered into workable tools or weapons. Gold carried little value for prehistoric man except to be admired and treasured for its rare, intrinsic beauty.

However, as man developed he soon found numerous applications for the mysterious golden metal. The earliest record of gold exploration dates to Egypt around 2000 B.C. Ancient records tell of an enormous alluvial gold deposit in Nubia, between the Nile River and the Red Sea in southeastern Egypt. This amazing discovery encompassed in excess of one hundred square miles. Using the most primitive of tools and excavating to an average depth of less than six feet, the laborers pried an approximately one thousand tons of gold from this rich discovery. Egyptian craftsmen, recognizing the extraordinary malleability of gold fashioned incredible jewelry, statues and idols of breathtaking beauty.

Throughout the history of mans involvement with gold, the precious metal has been prized not only for its beauty but for golds ability to withstand the rigors of time. No substance that appears commonly in nature will destroy gold. Unaffected by air, moisture, heat or cold, this noble metal will not tarnish, corrode, rust or discolor. Shimmering gold dust, golden nuggets of placer gold and brilliant vein occurrences have survived 4.5 billion years of cataclysmic geologic and climate changes; volcanic eruption, earthquakes, upheavals and deposition. Treasures of gold jewelry, bullion and coins, buried for thousands of years beneath land and sea have been found intact; as brilliant as the day they were abandoned. A relatively rare native metallic element, gold ranks fifty-eighth in abundance amongst the ninety two natural elements that make up the earths crust. Although considered a rare element, of all metals gold is, with the exception of iron, the most widely distributed over the planet. Gold has been found on 90 per cent of the earths surface and is mined in high mountain ranges, in the deeply weathered soil of the tropics, harsh deserts and in the permanently frozen tundra of the Arctic.

Gold is commercially mined on every continent with the exception of Antarctica. The richest gold producing area of the world is the Witwatersrand District of South Africa. This ultra rich area has yielded eighteen thousand tons of gold with no end in sight. Additional notable gold bearing areas around the world are Siberia in the former USSR, the Porcupine District in Ontario, Canada and in the United States the Yukon District of Alaska and the famous Mother Lode District in California.

In the United States nature was extremely generous. Thirty-two states have recorded significant commercial gold production. The highest yielding areas are located within the western states, California, Colorado, Alaska, Nevada and South Dakota. Other abundant locations for prospecting include Georgia, Arkansas, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Washington, New Mexico, Wyoming, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Michigan, Vermont and New Hampshire. The recreational gold prospector can find gold in his pan in practically every state of the union.

Gold is a prized media for artisans. It is a metal that can be deformed by pounding without breaking or crumbling. Gold, in its purest form is the most malleable or workable of all metals. One single ounce of gold can be drawn and stretched into an ultra fine wire over 50 miles in length without breaking or pounded to the incredible thinness of one hundred thousandth of an inch without disintegrating. Gold is easily reformed, readily polishes to a lustrous gleam, can be heated repeatedly without discoloration and joins to itself or other metals by soldering without the need for a bonding flux.

For more than 6000 years gold has been considered symbolic of wealth, power and status. In 1350 B.C. the Egyptian boy king, Tutankhem, was interred in a coffin elaborately cast from 242 pounds of solid gold. Throughout history men and women have adorned their bodies with brilliant, gleaming gold. The custom of exchanging gold during marriage ceremonies continues today.

The wealthy of Medieval Europe liberally sprinkled gold on their food to demonstrate the hosts great wealth. Today gold is still often used in food and has the E Number 175. Metallic gold is inert to all body chemistry, it brings no flavor nor has any other nutritional effect and exits the body unaltered.

Pre-historic man thought gold contained a mysterious, internal fire, a treasure from the Gods with healing and magical powers. Many cultures of sun worshippers revered gold as the tangible presense of their Gods; solid sunshine. In modern day Japan believers seek golds medicinal magic by immersion in an elegant bath tub designed in the form of a phoenix crafted from 400 pounds of purest gold. Gold and health have long been entwined in the magical belief that something so rare and beautiful could not be anything but healing and healthy.

Today modern esotericists and forms of alternative medicine embrace the healing properties of gold. Some gold salts have anti inflammatory properties and are used as pharmaceuticals in the treatment of arthritis and other similar conditions. However, only salts and radioisotopes of gold are of pharmacological value, as elemental or metallic gold is inert to all chemicals it encounters within the body.

Gold is viewed as a storehouse of value, the natural way for mankind to preserve capital and guard against financial uncertainty or monetary collapse. In modern times gold has served as a hedge against the threat of inflation and as a secure and safe way to secret away assets. Hoarding of gold occurs most often during times of war, adverse world conditions and international fears of economic instability. Gold has repeatedly conquered the attempts of regimes to inflate the currency of their country as well as circumventing the goals of those controling political power to command the economy of other nations.

Throughout recorded history, gold, the crowned king of metals, has been considered the ultimate monetary exchange. Gold is the only currency that isnt someone elses responsibility or liability; it is more that just a paper promise to pay upon demand. Golds worth does not rely on the economic stability of any country, political power or financial cartel. Gold has value in and of itself.

The current world price of gold is set daily by the London Gold Market which exchanges gold coins and gold bullion with other financial world centers such as Zurich, Hong Kong , Frankfurt and Paris. The daily price is based on pure or fine gold, therefore the value of gold gleaned in its natural state may vary depending on the impurities it contains. However, raw gold sold as specimens or jewelry will always bring a higher price. Gold nuggets are as distinctively different as snowflakes, although similar, no two nuggets are alike. A nugget of unique character and shape may sell for as much as five times its value by weight.

Do you have several pieces of broken or discarded gold jewelry you no longer wear? Now may be the time to cash in on the current gold rush. With the price of gold exceeding $1000 an ounce, a earring or broken gold chain could add up to a considerable sum.

To obtain the highest price for gold you may wish to liquidate, know the karat count. Because of the softness of pure 24k gold, it is usually alloyed or mixed with base metals for use in jewelry, altering its melting point, ductility, hardness and color. Alloys with lower karatage, typically 22k, 18k, 14k or 10k, contain larger percentages of silver, copper and other base metals in the alloy. The higher the karat the more you will be paid.

If you only have a piece or two to sell, try a local jeweler or take a vintage piece to an antique jeweler. They will take the artists craftsmanship into consideration and you will net a much higher price than for just the gold weight.

Around the globe many people are electing to avoid the risk of chemical contamination of their bodies, families and homes. Fortunately, solutions for addressing change exist and are within easy access. Choosing earth friendly alternatives allows us to live a natural, green lifestyle.

The benefits of sleeping on organic bedding, selecting organic foods and wearing organic clothing are numerous.

Organic Foods

The Organic Food Association tells us: It is common sense; organic food is good food. Good to eat, good for the environment, good for the small-scale farmers and farm workers who produce it.

Organic farming is all about health and wellness. To assure optimum health and resistance against illnesss, the natural balance in our own bodies and in the environment must be maintained. The use of artificial chemical pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, fertilizers, genetic engineering and drugs interfere with this delicate balance; with unknown and often harmful consequences! Organic farming methods affect much more than what can be seen or tasted.

Over the last fifty years, commercial farmers have, of necessity, continued to increase the amount of these hazardous applications. Cereal crops are sprayed as many as 8 times during the growing season. Many fruit and vegetable harvests have been sprayed 10 or 15 times. After harvesting the spraying process is repeated to retard grow of bacteria during storage and transport. Over spraying of fruit and vegetable crops destroys natural bacteria, leaving the plants increasingly vulnerable to attack from unwelcome pests or disease. Insecticides and fungicides are then required to fight off infestation and decay. However, these pests rather quickly become immune to the chemicals applied and their population increases rapidly. More powerful and increasingly toxic chemicals are then applied.

Organic certification is the consumers assurance that products have adhered to stringent standards and have been grown and/or handled according to rigid regulations without contamination from carcinogenic pesticides, fertilizers, human waste or sewage sludge. Certification attests that the product was processed without ionizing radiation or artificial color or food additives. Organic or chemically manipulated, which would you rather put in your body? We are what we eat. When our diet is built upon natural organic choices we are providing our bodies optimum food, produced in optimum conditions. Organically raised vegetables and fruit provide more minerals and nutrients than commercially grown produce and are more intensely endowed with color, scent and flavor; they certainly taste better!

Organic meats are produced from animals that have been treated humanely and reared on certified organic pastures and feeds. Certified organic meat guarantees that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have not been used at any stage of growth production.

Organic farming methods naturally nourish the soil with compost and organic manure. Well balanced soils product nourishing, strong plants, healthy for both people and animals. Organic agriculture can be a lifeline for small farms. It offers an alternative market where sellers can achieve fair and equatable prices for their crops. Organic farming may be one of the last ways to assure the survival of both our ecosystems and our rural farming communities .

Conventional farming endangers workers and their families. Scientific inquires confirm chemical toxicity related medical problems which include cancer, birth defects, memory loss, paralysis and death. Unsecured storage, improper application methods and unregulated handling and transportation procedures are not at all uncommon and often lead to tragic mishaps. As pests develop resistance, farmers desperate to maintain or improve crop yields often resort to more and more applications of expensive and stronger chemical products. Faced with rising costs, depleted fields and contaminated ground water, more and more small farmers have been forced to abandon their livelihood.

Organic farming, is not only safer and healthier for farmers, but also promotes equitable compensation in the supply chain. Organic farming provides an economically viable and socially acceptable alternative to large scale farming and the accompanying dependence on government crop subsidies. Support of the small organic farmer supports Americas economy.

Organic production methods dramatically reduce health risks. Many EPA approved pesticides were registered and approved prior to extensive research linking these toxic chemicals to cancer and other significant medical problems.

Skin care, personal care and cosmetics are the least regulated products under the US Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Be it is soap, moisturizers or deodorants, skin care products are an essential part of our daily lives. Do we understand what these choices actually contain and what we are forcing our skin to absorb?

Have you ever suffered from itchy, stinging or burning skin? Chances are that your skin absorbed irritants and chemicals from your skin care products. The skin absorbs ingredients in all the products that come in contact with our skin. Consider nicotine or HRT patches. They rely completely on skin absorption.

As mothers we are always concerned for the well being of our children. We tenderly comfort and bathe them with a wide range of products. These include soaps, shampoos, creams and lotions, many of which are used on babys sensitive skin several times a day. The skin is the largest organ of the body and the delicate skin of an infant can be up to 100 times more receptive to toxic chemicals and irritating ingredients that the skin of an adult.

Without been aware, parents put their babies at risk daily. Did you know that applying baby powder to your babys skin may pose a cancer risk later in life? The principle ingredient in many baby powders is talc, which several studies have confirmed as a known carcinogenic.

By the end of the year, the sale of organic textiles worldwide is expected to exceed $3 billion. Worldwide demand for organic textiles is increasing in response to consumer demand. Organic production takes requires time, demands more skills and knowledge, and at least for the present, costs somewhat more. It is worth it as organic materials do not contain any hidden costs to the environment.
