If you are wondering about how to use DVD Decrypter, you are reading the right article. In this article, we will essentially focus upon the process of simply copying a simple DVD using the DVD Decrypter copy technology. Well, for your information, DVD Decrypter copy is a simple process of copying a DVD disc following two simple steps.

Once you have installed the DVD Decrypter software on to your computer, it will guide you to make an exact replica of the original disc. It is not for you to worry about the possibility of the copy getting changed, shrunken or altered. Leave it to the DVD decrypter to give you a perfect 1:1 copy of the original disc. The best part is that the DVD Decrypter is freely available and is free of cost.

The first thing you must do for DVD Decrypter copy is to rip the DVD with DVD decrypter. However, there are different versions of DVD Decrypter. In this article we are going to deal with version 3.5.4.0. if you are using older version then you must be missing some of the older options. Moreover we are going to follow an ISO mode rip.

At the time of installing a DVD Decrypter, make sure you follow the correct settings in order to make a perfect DVD Decrypter copy. Also, you must correct all the errors when it stands ripped in ISO mode. In addition, make sure that it is CSS protected. You will have to remove the region and prohibited user operations (PUO) restrictions and bar the read errors.

You will need to take the following steps to get the ideal tool or settings to enter the settings menu:

- Automate the process of file system to parse. - Remove the Macrovision Protection. - Set the range of RCE protection region to 1. - Check the structure protection system. - Follow a normal removal method. - Select a semi automatic default destination. - Display maximum file size warning. - Show the RCE protection warning - Display region mismatch warning. - Display region not set warning. - Display MDS Not ISO warning.

Then, you have to create the MDS file and set the file splitting system to auto if you want the non- NTFS system to use ISO mode. During the process, if you come across any error, you can lower the reading speed to 4x, 1x or 2x. Alternatively, you may also try another DVD burner. Once you have completed the ripping process and selected a destination of your ISO file, you can go on to the second step of the DVD Decrypter Copy. Now, you will have to change the ISO mode to the write mode to allow the DVD decrypter to create the duplicate copy.

Then insert a blank DVD on which you want to make the DVD Decrypter Copy. And go back to the source area to select and open the MDS file and burn it. When you have completed the burning process, you can check it in your DVD player. Finally, when everything is alright, you can delete the ISO and MDS file from your hard drive. So your DVD Decrypter Copy is done and ready for use.

It seems these days that viruses are everywhere, and infecting more people than normal. I run a computer repair shop in Atlanta Georgia, and in the past month I’ve seen more infections from Virus than I’ve seen in twenty years in the business.

Many of our clients were already using virus protection software, however some of the new strains of computer viruses are completely bypassing their software and installing themselves. Why not follow the following practical hints on exactly how to avoid getting your computer infected in the first place?

First off, email is the biggest culprit with virus infections. If you get an email from someone you know, and it has a file in it, you should verify with them what the file is before you click on it. Be careful of very tricky emails, many of them are very compelling in making your open up your emails.

Secondly, be careful with the websites that you visit. What we’ve found is that even innocent looking websites might have malicious code right on the website that could cause issues with your computer.

Third, it might be time to choose another web browser over Microsoft Internet Explorer. You might want to consider an alternative choice like Opera or my personal favorite Mozilla Firefox. I have found Firefox to be much more stable, and much more secure over Internet Explorer. One of the main reasons why it makes sense to use Firefox or Opera is because many viruses will not work on Firefox which is just an added level of protection for you.

Fourth, avoid illegal download websites. Many sites that promote downloading illegal copies of software are much more likely to have virus infections. It’s a favorite of hackers to provide “free” copies of software so that they can inject their own custom code into your computer.

You may want to consider a better virus program. Some virus protection programs are very different than others. Do a search on c-net to get reviews of the most popular virus protection programs. Many of our customers swear by products like Avast.

By taking a practical paranoid protection of your computer, you’ll be able to avoid most computer virus infections. Good luck, and stay virus free.

It may come as a surprise to many people that it is very easy to convert videos to DVD. Of course you will need a powerful and easy-to-use software. One software that has become the standard in DVD authoring is ConvertXtoDVD. Why is ConvertXtoDVD popular? For one, it supports almost all known video formats. Second, it has lots of cool features such as a menu creator and its own burning engine. This means that with ConvertXtoDVD, you don’t need to use an external DVD burner like Nero. But the main reason why ConvertXtoDVD is popular is because it is very easy to use. How easy? Well all it takes is four steps as you can see below.

1. Program installation and file creation Of course the first thing that you should do is download and install the program in your PC. Once installed you can now select the files that you want to convert by clicking “File” then “Add video to file. ” From the menu, you can customize your DVD by changing the background image, fonts and title name.

2. Subtitle and chapter creation Next you can add subtitles by right-clicking “subtitle (0 stream)” and choosing “Add subtitle channel.” ConvertXtoDVD supports STR subtitles and IDX & SUB combination. Make sure that the video file and subtitle file are in the same folder to add subtitles successfully. After adding subtitles you would want to add chapters to your DVD. You can do this by right-clicking “Chapter (0 entry)” then clicking “Add chapter.” You can change the name of the menu text by clicking on it.

3. Convert video to DVD After taking care of all the details, you are now ready to convert your video to DVD. Doing this can be done simply by clicking the “Convert” button. The length of the video determines the amount of time needed to convert it. Because it has a powerful encoder, ConvertXtoDVD can convert a full movie in an hour or less.

4. Burn to DVD After converting the video file you are now ready to burn it to DVD. Click the “Burn result to DVD” option then insert a blank DVD in your drive. It doesn’t matter if you use DVD R(W) or DVD-R(W) because ConvertXtoDVD supports both formats. After 15 seconds, actual burning will begin.

After these four easy steps you will already have a DVD of your video files that you can watch in any DVD player.

When entering numbers into a spreadsheet, you sometimes need to ensure that the number format is consistent. For example, if the numbers in question represent prices, you may want to display a currency symbol or you may simply want to make sure that the number of decimals displayed is consistent..

Unless the user specifies otherwise, all numbers in Excel are rendered in the “General” format. What this means is that numbers are displayed exactly as one enters them: if you enter two decimals, two decimals are displayed; if you went to one decimal, one decimal is displayed; and so forth.

To specify the number format, the best idea is usually to select the entire column. To do this, simply click on the letter or letters representing the column. (If text is contained in the selection, it will not be affected by the number format you specify.)

Number formats are specified in the “Numbers” group of the Home Tab of Excel’s Ribbon. There are three important formats which apply to numbers: the first is simply called “Number”, the second “Currency” and the third “Accounting”. To gain access to the complete range of number formats, click on “More Number Formats” in the “Numbers” drop-down menu. Another way of opening the “Numbers” dialog box is to click on the launch button in the “Numbers” group of the Home Tab of the Excel Ribbon.

When you click on one of the number formats on the left of the “Numbers” dialogue box, you are given a series of choices which enable you to refine the way that the format will work. Thus, if your numbers refer to an hourly rate, you would click the “Number” category in the left column and then specify two decimal places. The option to “Use Thousands Separator” will add the appropriate separator to demarcate thousands. The separator used will depend on your locality: for example, in the UK or USA, a comma will be used; in European countries, a dot will be used.

The final option in the “Number” category lets you control the display of negative numbers. The default is to preced the number with a minus sign and to leave the colour of the text unchanged. However, you can also suppress the minus sign and change the colour of negative numbers to red; or, if you prefer, you can change the colour of negative numbers to red as well as displaying the minus sign.

When you click on the “Currency” category, you have pretty much the same choices with the addition of a currency symbol. One can specify which currency symbol is used or one can dispense with the currency symbol altogether.

The “Accounting” number format is almost identical to “Currency”. Here again, we can choose our currency symbol. However, there are no choices relating to negative numbers. This is because the convention in accountancy is to put negative numbers in brackets.

As well as using the number dialog box, you’ll notice a series of handy buttons which can apply each of the number formats with one click. There are also a couple of buttons for increasing and decreasing the number of decimals displayed in the selected cells.

Finally, there may be times where, although you enter a number into a cell, you do not want Excel to treat it as a number. For example, if you have a column of data containing a client ID, although the ID may be numeric, you may not want Excel to treat it like a number or to modify it in any way. You will probably want it to stay exactly the way it was entered. Whenever this is the case, it is best to format the number as “Text”. The simplest way of doing this is to select the appropriate column and in the number dialog box choose “Text” as the format.

Just ten years ago it was very difficult to produce videos with any sort of creative flair. Now with more powerful computers, it’s become even easier for the layman to create Hollywood style videos. Of course in many cases the computer you are using will dictate how easy it is to create videos. If you are using an older computer, you might be bogged down while trying to create videos. Why not examine your computer critically to verify that you can create videos easily and efficiently with your current system.

First, you want to look at the age of your computer. As a round ballpark figure, any computer over 5 years in age will have a hard time doing the processor intensive tasks of creating video.

Second, is one of the most important factors, the video card on your computer. If you don’t have a powerful video card, you’re going to have a much harder time processing your videos. Today’s modern computers come complete with lots of very fast video memory, which makes producing your videos much quicker. Many cards come with as much as 512MB or more of video memory.

Third, find out how much memory is installed in the computer. Just a few years ago 512MB was pretty standard in computers. But, for video processing, it’s best if you have between 2-4GB of memory. Also make sure you get high quality memory as that can make a pretty big difference in the speed and reliability in the work you perform, especially for memory intensive tasks like video processing.

Fourth, is the speed of the computers processor. This is the main workhorse of every system. You’ll have to have a pretty fast processor to handle all the intensive calculations involved in working with video. As long as you’re working with a processor that has come out in the last 2-3 years, you should have enough power.

Fifth, you’ll want plenty of storage space. A large hard drive is essential as many video files end up quite large. You’ll want to make sure that you have plenty of space so that you won’t run out of hard drive space in the middle of a large video production.

We’ve tried to maintain the order of importance in the above list. In the end however it’s a balancing act between economical upgrades versus the viability of purchasing a brand new computer anyway.

If you’re going to be processing videos on your computer, it’s essential that you have a fast, efficient machine. By making sure you’ve started with a capable machine, you’ll be much more likely to create beautiful videos with less stress. Just following these quick and easy steps should help you along that journey.

To get a web presence for yourself or your business, you will obviously need a website. But before you can get that new site up on the web, you will need to find a web hosting company for it. But how do you decide?

There are so many different web hosting companies out there beckoning to you - they all seem pretty good, which makes it even more difficult to decide. Of course, not every web hosting company will perform equally well at meeting the unique needs of your website. In this article, you’ll be able to get a little more information about what to look for in a web hosting company.

Prior to researching the companies themselves, you need too sit down and determine what the needs of your website will be. What will your design be like? Will you need a lot of disk space on the server for your site? Should you go with a Windows host, or a Linux host? What extras will you need? Do you need a database? A shopping cart? Make a list of your needs so you know what to look for in a web hosting company - this will help you narrow your search.

After this step, you’ll be ready to research your web hosting options. Performing a search with your favorite search engine will pill up a lot of choices. Of course, you should also consult with other business owners about their web hosts and ask for recommendations. The most important thing to consider is reliability. Any web host you sign up with should offer at least 99% uptime - if your website is for your business, this is especially important.

Next, compare the amount of space provided by each company. It is likely that they will have several package plans, but you want to compare different web hosting companies side by side to determine who is the best for the price offered. Hosting space is not the only thing you want to look at, but also bandwidth, email accounts, and even free scripts or extras.

A lot of site owners decide on a web host based on price alone. You get what you pay for most of the time, but not in every case. Price is not the only thing which you should consider. Look at price and reliability and look into the reputation of the company. Ask others who use the service how they like it; you can also look online for user’s opinions of the service.

You should also be able to find great web hosting companies that provide high quality hosting for a low and competitive price, but be sure that they offer exactly what you need before you sign up for their service.

Is Windows 98 running on your computer? Have you gotten the dreaded blue screen? Chances are that you’ve probably gotten it more than once. Windows 98 and blue screen of death are quite common, because this was a major programming bug in this windows system. When you get a windows 98 and blue screen of death, it usually means that something is wrong in your registry.

What is Registry?

The registry is the main part of the Windows system and contains registry files of all the programs installed in the computer. The working of the Windows 98 gets upset whenever the registry files get corrupt or missing. The windows which were introduced after the Windows 98 are capable of going through this situation by skipping the blue screen. Working on windows 98 is not that much helpful, is it?

Windows registry cleaner

There is a simple method to fix the errors in the registry. A windows utility cleaner could be easily downloaded from the net which easily fixes the problems in registry files which prevents the blue screen from appearing on the computer. Many kinds of registry cleaner utility software are available. They are different in their working but most of them work efficiently.

It is possible to manually solve the errors in the registry files. But a very important point that one needs to keep in mind while fixing the errors is that registry is a major windows database and deleting any important file could cause all the data to erase from the computer.

The best way of doing this is to get a registry utility cleaner from the internet. These types of programs are very easy to find and download from the internet by searching on the keyword over Google.

How to use a Registry Cleaner in Windows 98?

It does not take much of a time and is very simple to run the registry cleaner program. You just have to download the software normally and then run it. The registry provides the user with the number of errors found and an option to correct them. It is recommended that you take a backup of the registry files in case if some files are deleted by the program so that they can be put back to the registry.

What if You Still Get Blue Screens

There may be instances when one still gets a blue screen appearing on the computer even after repairing the registry files, which indicates some other problem. To sort out this, you need to think as what caused the blue screen to appear at first place. Installation of new hardware or software may also cause the blue screen to appear. If this is the reason, then that particular device driver must be uninstalled and not used and some other driver may be installed.

It may be a case of a hardware defect if you have not done anything else on the computer. There may be a chance of low memory space which indicates the addition of more memory space. There are many types of programs available on the internet which helps to determine if the hard drive is low on space.

The appearance of the blue screen is generally caused by corrupt registry files in the Windows 98. But this problem is normally solved after the running of the registry repair cleaner.

Video games are hugely distributed in the world today. One is always satisfied by the high quality entertainment factor provided by the video games. There have been researches which have revealed that people in millions of number in the United States are fond of video games and computer games. It indicates that a vast majority of the population is actually trying to find out what new is available for them.

People or enthusiasts can be leveled into three; 1) beginners 2) frequent gamers 3) experts. These three are bound to one arena where they will meet: the gaming world.

These people have their own questions in mind and are trying to personally find out the answers to their questions.

For a beginner, the question may be something like; what will I do with this game? This question may seem very simple but needs patience to answer. Such question would change and would elevate as time goes by and as the ability of the player improves. From this stage, their focus is neither to look for games nor to discover new game systems or consoles. Their mission is to learn and master the game no matter what game it is regardless of the console they use.

The second level of gamer is something caught between seeking and constantly going with the flow. These types of gamers now actually find some time to discover new things and ask question like, what other games are there for me. This question is embodied with the desire to satisfy the game and not just to play with it.

The third group of gamers is the expert group who should not be termed as addicted gamers or something even negative for them. They are certainly not addicted. They are not of the type who wants to grab every other game in the market but they want to further develop or expand the game so that other gamers may understand their level of expertise. Playing more and more games is not their cup of tea; rather they try to translate it. They grasp the game so well enough that they try mastering the game and then publish some essays or reviews about the games and do comparisons.

Comparison of a video game device becomes very important for all the three categories of gamers. This helps them grasp whichever game they are playing. On a further note, reviews and the comparisons always help the gamers in the right way to know about games that are actually worth getting and also about the best gaming consoles available.

One may wonder as how these gamers get ideas on reviews and the tasks they perform in order to write reviews of games. There are certain methods which one follows to get a result on comparison of gaming consoles. A brief list of certain things that may be looked upon while comparing gaming consoles is given below.

The very first thing that one must do is to play the video game itself. Play it until you finish the video game. If it is a leveled game then play it until the last level.

One should observe the graphics, audio and other such features and abilities of the game to share with the people to read his review and should relate the physical observations to the readers.

Relate to the readers the basic information that they need to know about the certain game. They will probably need to know about the console compatibility, the release date of the game, the name, the publisher, the platform, etc. For pc games, it is very important to first relate to the reader the system specification requirement of the game. Try to inflict your own observation on it.

The readers should be provided with some details of the game. In case of a racing game, the readers must be given the genre of the game with some basic details. These days, different types of PC games and video games could be easily found in the market with different methods of playing and multiplayer support. All these type of facts must be included in the reviews.

Give your opinion in the sense that they will agree with you when they will try the game you are comparing. There are so many things that you may want to point out in the game. The scoring system, the level of difficulty, the length of the game and so on, these are just examples of things that you may critic.

One must try comparing the game with some other game of the same sort based on the same playing technique. It is always better is the game he compares with is a game that he has already played before and is not new to him. The positive and negative points and features about the game must be laid properly based on the comparison.

On a last note, the conclusion must be properly laid in a balanced way. One may refer to the game that is really good to play but the positive points of the other game must also be referred. There should not be a one sided conclusion.

Most of your computer problems or errors originate from the registry of your system but it’s fair to say that if you are reading this article then you already know that. It is unlikely. Before attempting to clean your computer’s registry, you must be aware that your computers normal performance can be affected by just 2 main errors.

You will often find unused files/data saturating your registry if you don’t go through the process of uninstalling software when deleting it making your registry unclean. If this is something you perform regularly then you will notice how it affects your computer. A hardware driver that is incompatible with the system could be a much greater problem and cause a Registry Crash.

By forcing software to install despite an error message occurring during the installation could also be the problem. A more serious problem is the blue screen of death which might appear.

Of course your computer will still lose performance gradually even if you regularly carry out the task of maintaining your registry clean and safe and you have to be prepared for this. This particularly happens when you use your PC/laptop for months without ever carrying out routine maintenance. Maintenance programs provided by Windows such as disk defragmenter and disk clean up can certainly help you keeping your computer registry organized.

By performing maintenance regularly, your computer should perform better although just because it is organized that does not necessarily mean clean. When you carry out this routine maintenance regularly with windows tools, all of those unused files are kept together in a particular space of your disk. If, however, you rarely ever perform even the basic maintenance, these uneeded and unused files will be spread throughought your system.

On the market there are many registry cleaning software packages available to help you clean this essential part of your computer system. To make sure your computer never runs slow and to ensure you do not become frustrated with the constant errors again, you may perform the scanning every day.

Important features, like built-in task scheduler, redundant file cleaner and more, are installed so as to make it more user friendly. You could very well regret it if you purchase a program too early as you might end up with a piece of registry software that is not of the best quality and cause the computer system even more errors.

If you are looking for a very small, very fragile, very light laptop, then Apple MacBook Air is for you. A slight tap on the screen will close the system down completely.

Apple MacBook, being the lightest MacBook in its category, sets in in the spotlight, surpassing other MacBook. The depth from the back (at .76 inches) tapering towards the front bezel (at .16 inches), makes this the slimmest.

The design of this laptop makes it stand out in a crowd. The curved design makes Apple MacBook Air have a thickness of only 0.4 centimeters at most parts of the laptop. Other laptops have a flat level of thickness all over and this could be the reason for these laptops looking thicker.

This laptop does have few limitations like absence of connectivity ports and optical drive. Yet, numerous innovative features like standard-voltage processing parts and full-size keyboard within the diminutive size makes up for all limitations. Having an Internet connection reduces the utility of an optical drive greatly.

Pre installed software is a plus on the Apple MacBook Air. A few of the software titles installed already include: Mac OS Xv10.5 Leopard operating system, Safari, iTunes, iMovie, Xcode, Time Machine, and many others.

Due to its active participation in Greenpeace, Apple has enclosed the MacBook Air to suit all environmental concerns. It has a completely recyclable aluminum case, all circuit boards are BFR and PVC free. Apple has also been the first to sport a mercury-free display with arsenic-free glass. In addition, the retail packaging utilizes 56% less material that MacBook packaging. Its Energy Star 4.0 certified status also makes it EPEAT silver compliant.

Using a cookie eraser which deletes temporary internet files, or history files, is a software which removes all the cookies and the proof that you surfed sites on the internet. The Internet Explorer (IE) being very common with the people, you should know that this software tracks your activities done on the computer. The activities done for a wrong reason are not tracked by it. All the history information is stored in temporary folders by the software for a later view. One problem is that it is easily viewable by others. Using an internet files eraser is a very good way of deleting this.

All of this information could not be deleted by you. It would take a lot of time even in the case if you find everything. But the software program is capable of deleting it in less than 10 minutes. This software is helpful because:

What would you so if you came across a bad site and you don’t want the kids or your wife to know about this? What are you going to do if they come to know about it when you are off to work? What if you are working on job postings? What would happen if you just downloaded some music that’s illegal and now want to get it deleted? What if you want that no one should come to know about your bad deeds? What would happen if you are working on CVs and cover letters (which have all office files in a folder as well)?

These are some very good reasons for using a cookie eraser software program. They delete files such as:

History files in the internet Microsoft Office documents URLs that you typed Temporary files Cache files Temporary cookies Pictures And many more such files

All the temporary internet files, cookies, documents, pictures, etc could be removed by you from the computer without having to disclose your privacy. You need an internet history cleaner for this. It even increases the space in the computer. Just after 4 months of purchase of a new hard drive, I had run this software program in my computer and it increased 4GB of space in the hard disc. So, you may maintain your privacy by using the internet files eraser software program.

Are you having the need of solving the slow start up speed of computers? You have seen your friend’s old computer running much faster than your new Pentium IV computer. If your computer has Pentium IV processor and a well maintained windows XP, then it will run very fast even with RAM as low as 128MB and a small CPU. If you feel that your computer is running slow than usual, then there is a need to fix the slow working of computer with the help of software, before going into the hardware.

A software may be at fault and not working properly for the slow working of the computer. There are many things going on side by side which should not have been working with 1s and 0s that you are not even aware of.

There are several things that can slow your computer down:

1. Low space in the hard disc or hard drive or hard drive getting old. 2. Not enough memory. 3. Virus in the computer. 4. Many junk files present in the computer.

Probably the best way to find out the problem in your computer is to remove the easiest problem first and see if the computer becomes faster. You should do some first tasks and then observe what happens to the computer. 1. Delete the files that you do not want, the temporary files, and empty the recycle bin in the system tools under accessories. 2. Scan the disk. 3. Make partitions of the hard disc to remove any already fragmented regions. 4. Run the antivirus software program after an upgrade. 5. Get a registry utility software from the net. 6. Install and run the registry utility program and the program will fix the errors in the files.

The above process should take you about a good twenty minutes to do. Once you have finished everything reboot your system. If this does not make your computer start up faster then you need to look elsewhere at the culprit.

Have a look at the antivirus program of your computer. If it is old or incompatible with your computer, then probably it caused the computer to slow down. You may upgrade the antivirus for this. Run it sometimes in your computer to make sure that there is no malware in the computer.

Still, if the problem continues, then the hard disc may be at fault. Is there any type of sound produced by the computer? One symptom of an old hard disc is the clicking sound made either frequently or infrequently. There also may be the appearance of blue screen of death which causes the same problem. You may scan the hard disc by a scanner to check the problem. There may be the need of adding additional RAM memory. Have a look at the system tools and system information to know the current RAM memory status of the computer. A computer in which Windows XP is installed should run at a minimum 256 MB of RAM.

As you can see there are several things you can do to fix slow pc startup. It’s just a matter of taking the time to do it.

Sometimes your computer can start running very slow when it was previously running normally. In fact many people see this as a serious computer problem and think that its time to buy a new computer. Although this problem can become very serious, it may be something as simple as needing to fix corrupt registry.

One of the main reasons a computer slows down is because of a corrupt registry. The registry is the place where the computer stores all of the configuration files for windows and all other programs, when these files start to mess up, hen it slows down your computer.

You can clean and fix the registry manually, but you really need to be careful because any change to the registry can cause the computer to become non functional. That is why, unless you really know what you are doing; it is not recommended that you clean the registry yourself.

Get registry cleaner software

If you want that your registry gets cleaned without any risk, then you better download a registry fix software program which is generally available online.

A registry cleaner will clean and fix the registry; even so, you should still do a backup of your existing registry. Just to be on the safe side.

Using one of these software programs takes the technical side out of doing the job for you. You don’t necessarily have to be very tech savvy to work these programs. They are pretty user friendly and give step by step instructions.

The registry fix software performs a scan of the registry and presents the total number of errors in the registry. Then, it gives an option of cleaning the registry and taking a backup of the registry. You should take the backup before running the software program to clean the registry, because you could get back to the original settings if something goes wrong with the registry.

Then you can click the clean button which will make the program to fix all the errors in the registry. It usually takes 10 to 20 minutes for the program to clean the registry.

The registry problems may be the only cause for slowing down your computer. It the computer still runs slow, even after running the cleaning software, and then you need to look into other things such as maintenance procedure, defragmentation of hard disc, checking for virus, and updating the antivirus program of the computer.

All these procedures are very important for the computer and they should be done every once in a while by you, if you want your computer to work more efficiently and productively. Running the registry cleaner software program once in a while helps maintain the registry and no further problems should exist in the computer.

When we run classes on Adobe Acrobat at our London training centre, one of the first things we cover is the use of bookmarks. Most people agree that PDFs are brilliant but they can sometimes be rather difficult and tedious to navigate. Enter bookmark: they are clickable headings which link to specific parts of the PDF document and allow you to move around a lot more quickly than scrolling or moving one page at a time.

When you distribute PDFs containing key information about your services or products, you want to make sure that your readers can find important facts as quickly as possible. Including bookmarks in your PDF files can make them more attractive and useful to potential customers.

The bookmarks panel is one of the navigation panels normally displayed on the left of the Acrobat Reader screen. To show bookmarks, click on the bookmark icon or choose View - Navigation Panels - Bookmarks. Click on a bookmark to move to the page that it links to.

Bookmarks cannot be created using Acrobat Reader: you will need Acrobat Professional or Acrobat Standard, the versions of Acrobat you have to pay for. But, for the most part, you will also need one of these two bits of software to create your PDF as well.

Having created the PDF, open it with Acrobat Standard or Professional and open the Bookmarks panel. Then navigate to the first page that you want your readers to be able to find easily, choose New Bookmark from the Options menu located in the top right of the Bookmarks panel. Finally, enter a name for the bookmark. Repeat this procedure to create as many bookmarks as you want.

If this all sounds a bit tedious then let’s look at a few ways of speeding things up. Firstly, instead of typing a name for a bookmark, you can use the selection tool (located next to the hand tool on the toolbar) to highlight some text on the page then, when you choose New Bookmark, the highlighted text will be used as the name of the bookmark. Also, you can use the keyboard shortcut for New Bookmark: Control-B.

Some programs can also generate bookmarks automatically. One example is Adobe PDFMaker, a utility for Microsoft Office 97, 2002 and 2003. This is automatically installed along with Acrobat Standard or Professional and creates a new menu in Office programs called “Adobe PDF” and also an “Adobe PDFMaker” toolbar.

When you use the PDFMaker utility to create a PDF, any text formatted with a Word heading style, such as “Heading 1″, “Heading 2″, etc., will be automatically converted to Acrobat bookmarks. The same applies to tables of content and index entries. Similarly, if you use PDFMaker to convert an Excel workbook to PDF, bookmarks to each worksheet will automatically be generated. Even in PowerPoint, a bookmark to each slide in your presentation will be created for you.

There are also DTP packages which will automatically generate PDF bookmarks in the same way as Microsoft Word (from styles, indexes and tables of content). Naturally InDesign will do this but also QuarkXPress and Serif PagePlus. These three software packages have the additional benefit that you don’t actually need to own Acrobat Standard or Professional. The facility to create PDFs is built-in to each of these packages.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that bookmarks only be used to link to a particular page within the PDF document. (They can do tons of other things as well.) In any case, they actually link to a view not a page. Thus, for example, if a page in your PDF file contains a map, you can zoom in on the map till it fills the screen and create a bookmark of that view. When your user clicks the bookmark, he or she will be taken to the zoom level that was current when you created the bookmark.
