Best Indoor Plants Are Foliage Not Flowering Plants
June 26, 2008 Environment No CommentsMost of the houseplants indoor gardeners choose these days are foliage plants, as opposed to flowering plants. Though the flowering varieties may be more striking, their leafy cousins more than make up for this lack of show with their easy maintenance. They are often simple to grow and propagate and adapt easily to almost any environment.
Able to thrive year-round, foliage plants are the foundation of almost every indoor garden. There are plenty to choose from, too, as foliage plants come in hundreds upon hundreds of types, from which thousands of hybrids and varieties are derived.
A seemingly endless selection of sizes, shapes, leaf forms and leaf colors are available for the home gardener to choose from. However, if you want the most low-maintenance among the foliage plants, choose a Kangaroo Vine, a Maranta or a Pandanus. Each may be grown in any part of the country and is available almost everywhere.
Kangaroo Vine is distinctive for its long, shiny, heart-shaped leaves with ragged edges. The plant can grow as large as three feet tall and is propagated by slips. Kangaroo Vine does best when placed in east- or west-facing windows
Maranta is also known as the Prayer Plant because of the way its leaves close at night. It’s a low-growing plant that seldom grows more than a foot tall. Its green leaves are covered with diamond-shaped spots that are purple when the plant is young, though they change to a brownish color in more mature plants. Marantas thrive in a humid atmosphere, which can be achieved by regular spraying, and when placed in an east or west window. These plants should be fed frequently and watered well to get the most out of them. Propagation is by leaf cuttings.
Pandanus also called Screw Pine — can grow as high as fifty feet tall, other varieties of the plant are cultivated for potting. Pandanus is commonly known as Screw Pine. The plant’s narrow, sword-like leaves grow in spirals from the base. The sword-like leaves grow in spirals out of a com-mon base. The leaves on the household variety (P. veitchi)can grow up to three feet long and are a deep green with silvery stripes at the base. Like those of most Bromeliads, the edges of the leaves are spiny with sharp points.
Pandanus should be watered frequently, and its leaves should also be sprayed as frequently as possible. These plants prefer partial shade when possible and an east or west window, and they will tolerate a fairly warm atmosphere. P. utilis, a species of Screw Pine with red-spined leaves, is also used as a houseplant. You can propagate Pandanus by cutting off the suckers at the base and rooting them.
Varieties of foliage plants are available for every space and budget to create a tropical unique landscaping design, and there are no messy flowers to deal with. So no matter if you’re growing plants for show or just for atmosphere, non-flowering foliage plants are a great way to add more life to your garden.
The Truth To Efficiently Combat Global Warming
June 26, 2008 Environment No CommentsIf you regularly watch television, surf the internet, or listen to the radio, there is a good chance that you have heard about global warming. Press and media outlets have elevated the issue in the public consciousness through their increased coverage. There is a great deal of debate that surrounds the subject and you may be right to be concerned. The potential exists that, if the predictions come true, Earth will be a frightening and unsafe place for our family members of the future.
Unfortunately, many individuals do not realize how easy, as well as how affordable it is to join in on the fight against global warming. There is entirely too much emphasis placed on vehicles and appliances that are energy efficient. If you do not have the financial means needed to make these purchases, it is ok, as there are more affordable ways that you can help.
In order to prevent global warming, simply pay attention to the way your home is run. Not having your electric running when it is not in use is one such way. This is a great way to prevent future problems and save money at the same time.
One of the easiest ways to reduce electricity usage is to ensure that all lights and appliances are turned off when they are not in use. If you want to help, this is a free way to do so and it will also likely help your wallet by saving you money on your bills. Another way you can help is by making sure your thermostat is not turned up too high so enjoy the comfort of wearing a sweater instead. This step - even if reduced by just a few degrees - will have a definite impact on the poisonous emissions coming from your home.
Unfortunately, many individuals do not realize the many benefits to using energy efficient light bulbs, as opposed to traditional ones. This is another great way to save yourself at least a little bit of money, as well. A typical energy efficient bulb can operate for a year or two, making them last much longer than traditional light bulbs. Depending on where you shop, you may be able to buy these lights for around five dollars per multi-pack.
The contributions to combating global warming are not constricted to homeowners, as renters can help to. If you feel cold air sneaking into your house when it shouldn’t, speak to your landlord about making window repairs. Though many people hesitate to bring items such as the hot water heater or insulating blanket up to their landlord, these tips can result in saving him or her money in the long run.
Conclusion
You may not have the financial means needed to purchase a new hybrid or energy efficient car; however, you will still want to take a close look at your methods of transportation. First, examine how often you drive and if those drives are really necessary. If not, consider walking, carpooling, or using public transportation. Leave the car at home at least three times a week, and you can do your part in fighting global warming.

Reasons To Use Solar Power
June 17, 2008 Environment No CommentsThe idea of using renewable energy resources more is catching on for many people. This is partly because of the environmental problems, like global warming, that traditional energy resources are thought to impact on. A more tangible factor for many people is the rising costs of traditional energy resources. The costs are rising partly because the resources are getting scarcer and partly because of political problems. One such renewable resource that has been used for a few years now is solar power. This article will detail the advantages and disadvantages of solar power.
The Sun’s energy can provide our homes with power. Sunlight can also be used as an energy source for many of our increasingly ubiquitous personal devices, like laptops, mobile phones and personal entertainment systems. The first advantage of solar power is that it is a clean way to generate energy. Although there are carbon footprints created by the production of solar panels, once the solar panels are creating power it is clean power.
Using such systems also cuts down on pollution. It does not contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions. It does not pollute the water supply.
Solar power systems can be expected to last a long time. They are tough-wearing and sturdy. They have to be built to last so that owners can recoup their investments. It turns out that solar power systems last much longer than that.
Maintenance of solar recharging units on portable devices is not needed and will last the lifetime of the device. For home solar systems the maintenance costs are low. In general it is only the moving parts of the system that are likely to wear out. However, most of the solar powered systems in the homes have few moving parts. a good solar panel is thought to retain up to 80% of it’s efficiency for around 25 years.
A solar power system is neither too dangerous nor too complicated for most people to run. It requires no supervision from the government or any other agency because it poses no risks. The cost of running the systems is also very low.
There are also some disadvantages or issues that make solar power problematic. The first thing that puts many people off is the high costs of getting into solar power. Solar panels for the home can cost many thousands of dollars that have to be found by the homeowner. Many people don’t have the cash to change a system that already works. however, many governments are legislating to offer grants and rebates for using solar power so this can mitigate the upfront costs. also, over the lifetime of the system, the homeowner should make back the initial investment on reduced energy bills.
Despite the costs, possibly the biggest potential problem with solar power is the reliability. solar power systems are not useful in locations that are always cloudy or don’t get much sunlight throughout the year. And of course, it doesn’t create any power at night when there is no sunlight.
As Solar power is perceived as being unreliable, many governments are not as committed to it as a way to mass produce energy. Instead they see nuclear power as a better choice in terms of reliability.
However, for many homes, installing some kind of solar system is making practical and economic sense. In terms of solar panels the best way to mitigate against any of the inherent disadvantages of solar power is to tie it to the grid. all this means is that the home is still connected to the grid so that if the weather is not good for creating solar power the grid can be used.
The Benefits of Turning Your Vehicle Into A Water Powered Car
June 15, 2008 Environment No CommentsHow many of you are actually cringing right now thinking about the headache it will be to turn your vehicle into a water fuel car? Don’t worry, it’s actually quite simple even if you’ve never been underneath the hood of your car. You can either read the instructions or watch the videos for those of you who need visual aids.
By now you’ve obviously been spending anywhere from $35-$125 every time at the pump depending on how many gallons of gas your vehicle holds. We’re here to tell you there is no reason to do this anymore since the new alternative can double your gas mileage. Yes, you read that correctly and we’ll explain more about it below.
How Does This Hydrogen System Double Your Gas Mileage?
It all starts with something called HHO gas which is taken from water and sent through your vehicles carburetor or intake manifolds and allows it to run longer. People have reported increases of anywhere from 50% more gas to a 285% increase, which is fantastic. It may sound a little absurd, but you must realize the potency HHO gas has over regular gasoline.
The benefits of turning your vehicle into water powered car are overwhelming. Do you think a water powered car is for you? I definitely think so. Given the money and fuel efficient benefits, who wouldn’t want to turn their car into water powered one.
Other Positive Results When You Run Water as Fuel for Cars
People discovered the water powered car so that we can save fuel but apparently, there are also other benefits of turning your car into water powered one. One of the most notable benefits of having a water powered vehicle is that it offers better mileage. However, it also cleans itself!
This eventually gives you a cleaner, smoother running engine that will last much longer without serious breakdowns. So, not only are you saving money on gas, but also from not having to spend it on repairs for your vehicle. Who would have thought a water powered car could offer so much?
The Overall View
These are only a small glimpse of the many benefits a water fuel car can give you. We didn’t even go into things like faster acceleration, it’s easy to hookup and of course unhook, they keep the engines running cooler, and so much more we really can’t list it all here. So when you get time, think about how important it is to save gas, create less pollution, and just make the world a better place. In this scenario, everybody wins.
Getting to Know Solar Energy
June 11, 2008 Environment No CommentsI don’t know a thing about you but I bet that you’ve probably have heard it a hundred times about solar energy and that is good for you but how many of us actually understand the reason why or its benefits? Let me share with you the truth about solar energy. Take a look at the benefits of solar energy and what good can it do for you.
Have the thought of using solar energy ever come across your mind? Have you ever wondered if solar energy is right for you? Before you make any decisions, let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of solar energy. After reading this article, you could then decide if solar energy is right for you.
Solar energy can save you a lot of money on a long term basis. Right after the initial investment as good as free. The duration for this investment can be very short depending on the amount of electricity your household use. In addition, the government do provides financial incentives that will help to reduce your cost.
How does solar energy help save the environment? Well, solar energy is environmentally friendly. The energy that is release is clean, renewable and sustainable to help protect our environment. Solar energy does not pollute our air by releasing harmful gases unlike many other traditional forms of electrical generators in other words; it helps to lower down the harmful green house gases.
Solar energy systems are virtually maintenance free and therefore will last for decades. Once installed, there are no recurring costs. It operates silently and it does not release offensive smell. It also does not require you to add any fuel. More solar panels can easily be added in the future when your family needs grow.
However, solar panels require quite a large area for installation to achieve a good level of efficiency. The efficiency of the system also relies on the location of the sun although this problem can be overcome with the installation of certain components. The production of solar energy is influence by the presence of clouds or pollution in the air as well.
No solar energy will be produced during the night time but there are batteries backup systems or a net metering will solve this problem. Installing net metering for night time usage will allows you to save electricity and money too. As far as solar powered cars, their speed might not appeal to everyone as it does not move with the speed that you desire it too.
Now that you know you are aware of the benefits and uses of solar energy, this will enable you in making the right decision on whether or not solar energy is right for you. Put all the factors into consideration, solar energy could not only saves you money but also the environment as it will not add on in increasing the problem of global warming today.
Investing in the Environment
May 19, 2008 Environment No CommentsFor many years, money that was used for good will was called charity and money used to make more money was called investing. Not anymore.
Today, the two concepts are forming into a financial arena called socially responsible investing. Both investors and mutual fund companies are implementing this new idea and discovering that they can be profitable and at the same time do some good for the environment and society.
“Socially responsible investing means you don’t have to compromise your own personal beliefs to make money on Wall Street… whatever those beliefs are,” states Bob Guthrie, who is an investment broker with A.G. Edwards in Burlington, Vt.
Even back in the early 1900’s the idea of choosing investments for social reasons occurred when church members formed together and refused to invest in tobacco or alcohol companies. Guthrie also says that the trend has continued with investors dodging corporations associated with the Vietnam War or companies investing in South Africa. And that trend continues today with investors selecting companies that are more environmentally friendly over those that are not.
So, yes, growth in this type of investing has ballooned during the past few years as more and more investors have moved social consciousness into the main street of investing. And the impact of this trend is being felt.
With help from stockholders, says Rob Kruger, vice president of portfolio management at Progressive Asset Management, business practices concerning the environment are beginning to change, While the issues may differ, he said companies are realizing they will suffer the consequences if they aren’t viewed as being socially responsible.
Kruger said, “As this investing community continues to grow, a lot of proposals are being addressed by investors at annual shareholder meetings. A whole spectrum of issues and activities is now being put forward.”
As part of its operational procedures, Progressive Asset Management conducts research for eco-friendly and socially responsible mutual funds. The firm filters out companies for environmental problems or nuclear involvement or whatever issues their clients are concerned about.
“As time flies, companies are becoming more and more cooperative with us,” Kruger said. “Many of them are now very eager to talk about these social and environmental issues.”
Guthrie agrees that American corporations and business practices are aware of stockholders who are very concerned with social and environmental responsibility.
“Make sure your hard-earned capital is not invested in companies with little concern for the environment,” he advises. “Keep these things in mind when you invest and corporations will, too.”
Why Bear Bile Farming Is Useless
May 14, 2008 Environment No CommentsBear bile farming is a reality today. Although it is unnecessary to bile a bear, it is still very much a common practice in some places today. It causes extreme pain to the bears. During the process, it can be observed that bears gnash their teeth, bite their cages, moan, and even chew their own paws because of the pain.
Bile Extraction - Bile extraction is done in the crudest manner, and without any form of sanitation. The persons conducting it are unskilled and the process is not up to modern veterinary standards. Most of the bears die during or soon after bile extraction. If they live, they suffer from liver cancer, as a result of chronic inflammation and infection of the gall bladder and liver. Generally, farmed bears live only up to 4 years.
Why People Bile Bears - Bile is a digestive liquid produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. Bile gathered from bears has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for at least three thousand years for a variety of purposes. It is used in Chinese physiotherapy, to cure inflammations and to dissolve gall stones and kidney stones. Also, it is thought to help detoxify the liver and improve eyesight. And according to research, bears are the only mammals that produce the bile salt ursodeoxycholic acid, which is effective in treating some liver diseases.
Before, bear bile was gathered by killing wild bears and removing their gallbladders. In recent decades, when wild bears became increasingly rare, bile became prohibitively costly for most Chinese. But then, during the year 1980, the Chinese bear bile farming industry adapted a technique first developed in North Korea. This involved extracting bile from captive bears without having to kill them.
Bear Cruelty - The bears are housed in cages hardly large enough to hold the animal itself. To get the bile, an incision is made in each bear’s abdomen and a catheter (which is basically a plastic or rubber tube) is then inserted into the gallbladder. The bile is drained through the catheter and then gathered for sale.
How is the process done? To gather the bile from the gallbladder, a connection from the gallbladder (located deep inside the body) to the surface has to be established. The connection, which is medically called fistula, is made in any of the three ways: insertion of a metal tube, insertion of a plastic tube, or creation of a tissue bridge between the gallbladder and skin. The connection is conducted by untrained and unskilled individuals who do not observe modern veterinary standards.
To gather the bile, some bears wear a “metal jacket”. It is worn around their bodies and it has a collection container attached to it. There are bears forced to lie on the floor of their small cages so the bile will drip downward. Keep in mind that their crush cages are extremely small. The floor is made up of iron bars so the bears cannot stand or lie down on firm ground. This results in neck and back injury. Since a bear’s body will try to exclude the inserted metal or plastic tube or close the tissue bridge, scarring and damage is done to both the inside and outside of the bear. Sometimes, to prevent the closing of the incision, hot pieces of metal are inserted without any form of sedation or anesthesia. Bile is collected twice a day, and this goes on for the rest of their lives.
Why Bear Farming is Useless - This is all very unnecessary. There is no need to make poor bears undergo such abuse. The use of bear bile is obsolete. There are at least 75 herbal medicines that can be used as an alternative to bear bile. Of which, 54 are proven to work. These alternatives are a lot cheaper and more convenient.
Now, synthesized bear bile that contains UrsoDeoxyCholic Acid (the active constituent in bear bile) is available. All these alternatives are just as effective without the deaths of innocent bears. Let us put a stop to bear bile farming. It causes unnecessary torture to poor bears.
Easy Steps to Green Living
May 13, 2008 Environment No CommentsPeople are beginning to turn to green living practices, to help save the planet for their descendants, as global warming continues to pose a danger for the planet’s future. All aspects of our lives, including driving to work and mowing our lawns, can be incorporated into to living green.
It’s a daunting prospect to switch to green living all at one time, and this might actually scare some people away from taking on these most important earth friendly changes. However, you can start slowly, so that you ease into green living and will still help positively impact the earth’s environment.
Some cities have a big problem with smog and air pollution, and much of it can be traced to manufacturing plants. However, that’s not the only contributor to the problem. Cars and trucks, traffic congestion and long commutes add considerably to the pollution.
With so many vehicles making their way through the streets, the sheer volume of pollutants being produced is wiping out the atmosphere’s ozone layer. If you would like to do your part to preserve the environment, consider car pooling, cycling or walking to work, taking public transportation, or even purchasing a new hybrid vehicle that’s less damaging to the air you breathe.
Even small changes like this can provide substantial environmental relief and help to ensure our world is here for many generations to come. If you examine your home, you will find various ways to include green living in your life. Which brand and type of bulb do you use?
Typical incandescent bulbs add up to higher electricity costs and more carbon dioxide. If you exchange even a few of these light bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs, you can help save the environment and also save money on your electric bills.
You can also seal any gaps around your windows or doors to keep any cool drafts from going into the house. This can cost you more money. Your house should be well insulated so that you can cut down on energy “escapes,” especially during the wintertime. The better insulated your house, the less your furnace will have to run, which will save you money and will save energy, too.
Next, examine your appliances to see if they’re consuming excessive energy. If you have older models, it’s likely that they’re not very efficient. While some of the changes are in the appliances that you use, other ways to go green involve your own habits and actions.
For instance, do you find yourself opening your oven door frequently to see if what you are preparing is done? How hard an appliance has to work is directly proportional to how hard it is on the environment. Continually opening the oven door will result in the temperature dropping almost 25 degrees. The oven will have to work again, even harder, to bring the temperature back to the level at which it originally was.
Recycling is an excellent way to save our environment. Try to buy as many products as you can that can be recycled. Avoid the non-recyclable items such as Styrofoam cups. The less trash that has to be burned - or buried into our soil - the better off our planet will be.
These may seem like small changes, but they can have a huge impact on the environment. Simply put, if everyone does them, this has a huge impact in a positive way on the environment. Every little bit everyone can do will go a long way toward preserving our planet for future generations. Pay attention to the environment and get involved so that you, too, begin to positively impact the environment through green living practices that will only benefit the earth.
