Heartgard Plus, a combination of ivermectin and pyrantel, has been made the leading brand of heartworm preventative by veterinarians because of it’s outstanding efficacy.

Heartgard is currently a prescription only medication, therefore you will need to consult your dog’s veterinarian before purchasing Heartgard and beginning treatment.

Heartgard Plus dog treatment comes in three dosages for different weights of dog.

Handy six-dose or twelve-dose packages are available for half or full year treatments in weight ranges from 0-25lbs, 26-50lbs, and 51-100lbs.

The weight ranges are conveniently color-coded with Blue being for dogs 0-25lbs, Green for dogs in the 26-50lb range, and Brown for dogs between 51-100lbs.

This makes it easier for owners to recognize which package contains the correct dosage for their dog.

Although there is competition from at least one discount generic, Heartgard remains a product of choice.

The monthly Heartgard Plus heartworm preventative medication can be given to puppies as young as six weeks of age and can also be safely used by very small dogs, breeding females and stud males.

Before starting puppies over the age of 6 months on the preventative program, they must be tested for heartworms and given a clean bill of health.

Heartgard plus chewables are beef flavored, which will make your life a lot easier when you are trying to get your animal to swallow it, it also protects against 2 species of roundworm and three species of hookworms as well as heartworm.

Dogs should be tested annually for heartworm at the vet clinic.

Heartgard has a very low incidence of allergic reaction or neurological malfunction, so you can rest assured that it is one of the safest heartworm preventatives available for your dog.

Heartgard Plus chewable are made by Merial, the same company who produces Frontline, Enacard, Recombitek, Imbrab and Oravet, so you will know that you are dealing with a reputable company.

Merial quickly addressed the issue and announced that wheat gluten is not present in Heartgard for dogs, and it is therefore unaffected by the controversy over wheat gluten.

Beware of buying cheap Heartgard on the net unless you know your supplier very well.

Another nice service Heartgard dog products offer is a reminder on a monthly basis that you should treat your pet.

Because it is all too easy to let that one thing slip your mind in the hustle and bustle of modern life, the Heartgard website can send you automatic monthly reminders via email.
