Coca-Cola Clocks: Collectible Time Travel

by Daniel Wright

Almost everyone in the world recognizes the distinctive logo of Coca Cola. Since Coca Cola became so popular worldwide, the company realized many years ago that issuing collectibles bearing the Coca Cola label would be an excellent form of advertising for their product. Collectors of any age can now find numerous Coca Cola items to fit their tastes and pocketbooks.

The Coca-Cola Santa, which was introduced in 1931, has popularized the classic Santa look, what we associate Santa as looking like. The Christmas Santa has been featured on mugs and clothing, and people collect Coca-Cola clocks, signs, pins, sweatshirts and millions of other things for their practicality or just for the logo.

Coca-Cola clocks were originally made to place in stores selling the sodas and many have a "Sold Here" text to directly advertise the brand. These were large and were often given to merchants as an incentive to display them. They range from simple clocks with logo and decorations to elaborate neon clocks. Alarm clocks are very popular for home use, but the neon clocks are seen as art and decor as well as merely practical timekeepers.

In addition to the vintage and older Coca-Cola clocks, in more modern times all sorts of watches and clocks have been made and continue to be very popular items. They make perfect gifts for Coke aficionados of course, but many who don't have collections still have a fondness for the brand and enjoy even a single item. Clocks, after all, are imminently practical.

There are even pins made that are replicas of these Coca-Cola clocks, and people who specialize in pin collections and those who specifically collect advertising and logo clocks all seem to enjoy these attractive pins. They make excellent decorations for gift packages as well, and can hint at the kind of present inside to tease a collector.

Modern Coca-Cola clocks may be sophisticated electronic chronometers or replicas of vintage clocks. Age alone is not what makes these clocks desirable or valuable, since some from only a few years ago may bring many times as much at sale or auction than real vintage ones. There is also a thriving business in making vintage replicas. Replicas can be fairly costly, but most of them are a more affordable way to own or give these items.
