There is an almost unlimited number of tools for creating and designing a website. These range from tools to actually build your web site, to design tools, software programs for making your site do things like sell products, take subscriptions, store data, list other services.

What kind of tools do you need to build a successful web site? Well first you need a web host. Sometimes web hosts will throw in lots of free tools. Things like web design tools, or web construction tools. This can include simple ways to create and design web pages.

These let you design your own website. So you can design a web site for free. It doesn't have to cost much because you have the tools thrown in for nothing when you set up your website with certain hosts.

Other tools include programs to monitor web traffic. This is important if you care about getting traffic to your website. Everybody cares about getting website traffic, don't they? Isn't this a preoccupation that ranks as just slightly less important than finding bin Laden? I think so. Traffic is important because web traffic means visitors to your website. You need tools to monitor this traffic because if you don't you will not know if people are actually visiting your website.

Most tracking software will tell you where your visitors have come from. If a visitor does a search engine search and clicks on your your listing, the tracking software will usually tell you the details of that search. It can also tell you how long your visitors stayed on your site, which pages they visited, how long they stayed on each page, and from which page they left your website.

You should also track your promotional efforts made on behalf of your website or web site. If you run advertisements, for instance, you will want to track these ads. You will want to see how many people visit your website from ad A and how many from ad B, and so on. If you run ads with a program like Google Adwords there are usually detailed and powerful tracking tools built right into the service. For instance, Adwords lets you create a number of different ads that will be shown for a defined range of keyword searches. You can then see the number of views for each of those ads, and the number of click throughs each ad generated. This alows you to tweak your advertising campaign. It tells you whether you should bulk up ad A or eliminate it entirely from the advertising rotation.

Other web tools include traffic generating systems, automatic link exchange scripts, banner advertising rotators, forum software, e-commerce tools, autoresponders, and so on. All of these tools help you organize your web site and make it do what you want it to do.
