It is by no means easy to stop smoking cold turkey. But if you seriously make an attempt, it will be possible and will very effectively veer you towards a no-smoking life.

There are a number of ways to quit smoking and invariably many people prefer the one cigarette at a time approach. Though it might be the easiest method to be followed, it would not be very effective. This is because everyone does not necessarily calculate the number of cigarettes he/she smokes each day. In such cases, this method makes absolutely no sense. This is because you are not keeping a count of the number of cigarettes you smoke and thus the schedule can be disrupted very easily.

The best option to quit smoking, if you have the will power, is to stop smoking cold turkey. This means that you need to put an end to the obsession completely. You need to do it even if you are completely addicted to smoking. Thus, this method needs a great deal of willpower. This is very difficult method especially for chain smokers who are completely addicted to smoking.

It is obvious that cold turkey is a method of freeing oneself from the addiction in a way in which the individual has to suffer both mental agony as well as bodily pain. Giving up an obsession all of a sudden is certainly a very stressful and difficult task to do. The whole process is difficult because of the nicotine present in the cigarettes. The nicotine is a very strong addictive agent and when consumed, it stimulates the receptor cells in the brain. Thus, when you tend to stop it completely from entering into your system, your system would not react to it in a favourable way.

However, there are some exceptions to this method too. These would make the entire process more effective and easier and less painful. You can never opt for this way by deciding randomly one fine day. You need to do some preparations in before you decide to go the cold turkey way. Nothing will be achieved this way. You would get back to smoking again within no time.

These preparations have to be made a fortnight before the day you have decided is right for you to start cold turkey. Make sure this date is marked out in the calendar and look on it as the day that will change your life. First you need to think positively about life. Have a small notebook and jot down in it all the benefits that you are going to reap as result of giving up smoking. The effect it will have on friends and family, the goodness it will bring about in your health and life. Besides this ensure that you drink plenty of water. The body will require a lot of fluids before going cold turkey.

On the day before adopting the cold turkey method, make sure the fridge is filled with celery and carrots as they will benefit you in keeping the desire to smoke at bay. Also keep all your favorite food and maybe even your favorite movies. And do not forget to get rid of the cigarette packs.

Start the D-day with a small prayer and meditation for a few minutes. Just think about all the benefits you will enjoy if you quit smoking. Carry on your work like any other day. You will surely experience a number of urges to smoke throughout the first day. You need to make sure that you do not give in to the urge. Instead, munch the veggies that you have piled up and keep yourself occupied with other things. The craving would not extend for a period more than fifteen minutes.

Gradually, you will realize that your urge to smoke would have decreased with the passage of time. You will reach a stage when your craving becomes minimal and then totally vanishes. This is the time when you can be sure that you have reaped the benefits of your efforts.
