Solar power and many other renewable energy systems are gaining more exposure for a couple of main reasons. The first reason is that traditional fossil fuels that typically power our homes are becoming expensive. Indeed, constant increases in utility bills has caused people to look for alternatives. And solar power kits and other forms of renewable energy offer a viable alternative.
The second reason is the environment. People are becoming more concerned about what we are doing to the environment and the legacy that we leave for our children. A renewable energy resource is self renewing. It will not run dry or run out the more you use. It will not run out if more people use it.
In fact, you could accurately say that by not taking advantage of Sun and wind power, we are wasting these free energy resources. And by building systems that take advantage of these resources we do less damage to the environment than burning fossil fuels.
Solar power kits can take a number of forms but principally they are about providing more heat or more electricity to the home.
You need physical warmth to keep the home warm and habitable. You need heat for water to take a shower or bath. And you need electricity to power many things in your home. You may cook using electricity, you may warm the house using electricity. You almost certainly provide light to the home using electricity.
Solar power kits use a passive approach to providing hot water to the home. They rely on the sun warmth to heat the water that is then passed into the homes plumbing system. However the most common form of solar power kit is one that uses solar panels.
A solar panel is a series of photo voltaic cells (PV). A PV cell is made of a compound of silicon. This reacts with the photons in Sunlight to displace an electron. When a number of PV cells are lined up, in a solar panel, a current flows. This current is direct current (DC).
DC can be stored or directly used on some appliances. However, if it is converted to alternating current then it can power many of the household appliances that we use every day, like the fridge, cooker, TV, radio and lights.
Although there is lots of potential for a solar system to power your home, the main drawback is that it is totally reliant on the Sun. and sometimes the Sun does not shine as brightly or there are overhead clouds that interfere with it striking the panels. Anyone that uses a solar system is advised to have a back up system in this eventuality. Most people have the utility company or a gas powered generator. If you want to use another renewable system as backup then think about a wind generator.
A wind generator in the family home makes a lot of sense because wind is pretty much everywhere. So you won’t be short of the natural resource that will generate power. By combining the two systems, solar ans wind, you will be covering all types of climatic conditions. In fact, a wind generator can work at night when a solar system is no use.
Of course, you should probably stay on the grid until you are sure that such systems can provide all your energy needs or until you become more experienced with renewable energy systems.
