The reverse osmosis system was originally developed for industrial use in printing and photo processing but because of the need for clean water, systems have been adapted for domestic use. Finding the right reverse osmosis filter system for cleaner water at home is important if you understand that there are more than 2000 toxic chemicals in our drinking water.
Originally intended for industrial use, the domestic reverse osmosis filter system works by using high pressure to force water through a membrane. Minerals and impurities won’t be able to pass through the membrane, leaving the water that flows out, clean. The type of membrane and the water pressure used will influence the effectiveness of an osmosis system. The amount of contaminants in the water also affects how efficient the system is in purifying normal water.
It is important to understand that the concentration of toxins, water pressure and quality of membrane used to design a filtration system. There are generally two types of membranes used in reverse osmosis - the cellulose triacetate (CTA) membrane and the FTC membrane - each with their own functions. While CTA membranes are organic and more cost effective, they tend to attract bacteria growth and sometimes may generate a smaller volume of water with a lower quality.
The other type of membrane is the FTC membrane, which is inorganic and more expensive than its CTA counterpart. A great advantage to this type of reverse osmosis system is that bacteria are not attracted to the FTC membrane. Unfortunately, chlorine in the water can damage the membrane and a carbon pre-filter might be required in addition to the reverse osmosis system with a FTC membrane.
When choosing a reverse osmosis filter for clean water at home, there is the tank and tankless system. A tank system uses a plastic bladder that contains the treated water available for dispensing while a tankless system has multiple membranes that enable treated water to be directly dispensed to a tap instead of storing it in a tank.
A system that makes use of a tank to hold the purified water is a more traditional system and is generally cheaper than the tankless system. However, if you live in a place with space constraints, the more costly tankless system will suit you better as it takes up less space. You must know, however that the membranes used in a tankless system can be a little expensive to replace and a pressure booster pump may be required as an additional fitting because this system needs a pressure of at least 40 PSI to operate.
If you’re looking to finding the right reverse osmosis filter for cleaner water at home, you should also be aware of the disadvantages that accompany a water system. Apart from these systems costing a hefty amount and the purified water also expensively produced, the main drawback from using reverse osmosis is its removal almost all minerals from water, even trace minerals. As a result, supplements must also be taken to counteract the lack of vital minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium found in normal drinking water.
If you’ve worked out your budget and are willing to spend the time and money in finding the right reverse osmosis filter for cleaner water at home, then installing and maintaining such a system may be a good answer to drinking cleaner water. Bear in mind, however, that there are many other water filters that are cheaper and more apt to serving your domestic needs.
If you are looking to use your purification system for a long term, choosing a reverse osmosis system for clean water at home will be an important step in your long-term investment. Your initial payout may be costly but if you take the time to choose the right system, you will be able to find a good quality unit without having to pay top dollar.
About the Author:
If it gives you peace of mind to drink ‘clean’ and purified water instead of regular water that contains thousands of toxic chemicals, you may want to seriously consider investing in a reverse osmosis system. These units, while expensive, are designed to flush out toxins and minerals from water, leaving it safe and ‘clean’.

Solar power and many other renewable energy systems are gaining more exposure for a couple of main reasons. The first reason is that traditional fossil fuels that typically power our homes are becoming expensive. Indeed, constant increases in utility bills has caused people to look for alternatives. And solar power kits and other forms of renewable energy offer a viable alternative.
The second reason is the environment. People are becoming more concerned about what we are doing to the environment and the legacy that we leave for our children. A renewable energy resource is self renewing. It will not run dry or run out the more you use. It will not run out if more people use it.
In fact, you could accurately say that by not taking advantage of Sun and wind power, we are wasting these free energy resources. And by building systems that take advantage of these resources we do less damage to the environment than burning fossil fuels.
Solar power kits can take a number of forms but principally they are about providing more heat or more electricity to the home.
You need physical warmth to keep the home warm and habitable. You need heat for water to take a shower or bath. And you need electricity to power many things in your home. You may cook using electricity, you may warm the house using electricity. You almost certainly provide light to the home using electricity.
Solar power kits use a passive approach to providing hot water to the home. They rely on the sun warmth to heat the water that is then passed into the homes plumbing system. However the most common form of solar power kit is one that uses solar panels.
A solar panel is a series of photo voltaic cells (PV). A PV cell is made of a compound of silicon. This reacts with the photons in Sunlight to displace an electron. When a number of PV cells are lined up, in a solar panel, a current flows. This current is direct current (DC).
DC can be stored or directly used on some appliances. However, if it is converted to alternating current then it can power many of the household appliances that we use every day, like the fridge, cooker, TV, radio and lights.
Although there is lots of potential for a solar system to power your home, the main drawback is that it is totally reliant on the Sun. and sometimes the Sun does not shine as brightly or there are overhead clouds that interfere with it striking the panels. Anyone that uses a solar system is advised to have a back up system in this eventuality. Most people have the utility company or a gas powered generator. If you want to use another renewable system as backup then think about a wind generator.
A wind generator in the family home makes a lot of sense because wind is pretty much everywhere. So you won’t be short of the natural resource that will generate power. By combining the two systems, solar ans wind, you will be covering all types of climatic conditions. In fact, a wind generator can work at night when a solar system is no use.
Of course, you should probably stay on the grid until you are sure that such systems can provide all your energy needs or until you become more experienced with renewable energy systems.

If you are considering replacing your old flooring with a Pergo floor, there is nothing that should hold you back! In fact, Pergo flooring is constructed with a special unique “tongue and groove” system that ensures an easy installation for those that are installing flooring for the first time! Also, if you have any questions about the flooring or getting it professionally installed, the retailer will be able to help you.
Before doing anything, you will need to figure out what you need as well as how much of everything you need; such as flooring and the accessories. You will definitely want to use a calculator or a professional to determine the exact amounts to purchase. If you decide that you are going to install the flooring yourself, all the items that you’ll need for the flooring should be available when/where you buy the flooring. That is why people consider Pergo not only a floor, but as a complete flooring system.
When getting all the supplies for the floor, you will find that there are things that will make the installation easier. Some of the things are: 1. The Pergo Glue; which you will need to use otherwise the Pergo warranty will not be valid. 2. An Installation Kit; which will include a tapping block and spacers to make sure the joints are tight. 3. A Pull bar; which will help make a tight fit in that areas that are difficult to reach/ 4. Under-layments’ which will even out all the irregularities in the sub flooring as well as provide a sound and heat insulation. 5. Floor Clamps; which will make the installation process easier and will make the finished floor stronger. 6. Pergo Sealant; which will secure all the gaps between the wall and the floor; making sure there is a maximum moisture resistance. 7. Pergo Putty; which will help mends any kind of damage that may occur to the floor when installing. 8. Installation Straps; which will simplify the installation process, but are not required.
Before installing a Pergo floor, you will need to know a few different things. In fact, some of those things that you should know are 1) Pergo floors are made for indoor use only, 2) it must be installed as only a floating floor, and 3) it must not be fixed to a sub-floor.
When installing the floor, you will want to take into consideration the degree of the floor movement to the walls, stairs, pipes and any other objects that changed with the humidity and temperatures. In fact, the expansion distance is ” in normal weather; as it is very important when doing corners, openings and angles for doorways and arches.
Another thing that you must do to achieve the best product is to allow the Pergo products to sit in the carton they came in for at least 48 hours; in the room that they will be installed. While the product is being installed, the humidity should be between 30-90%, as well as the temperature should be stable and within 15F of the normal room temperature.
Once you have gotten all the things you need, as well as allowing the boards to sit the proper amount of time required, you may begin to install them! However, Pergo flooring should be installed over other Pergo products; such as Pergo underlayment, foam and whisperwalk. Good luck!

Many people are so focused on saving money that hiring a contractor to do kitchen remodeling job is something they would never consider. However, when you think about it, hiring a contractor may just be the smartest move you can make. Let’s look at the facts and see why hiring a contractor can be such a good idea.
Without a contractor you have to be sure that you understand how to handle all of the necessary tasks in the remodeling process. You need to know how to do electrical work, plumbing work, sanding, painting, flooring and installation of cabinets, countertops and whatever else you want done. If done improperly the cost of repairing mistakes may just make doing it yourself more costly than hiring a contractor. Now when you hire a contractor you will know the work will be done correctly.
You will not have to worry about mistakes and you will be able trust that when the project is complete everything will be useable and functional. Having the peace of mind may just be the best pay off. The only time it may not make sense to go with a contractor over doing it yourself is if you have experience with remodeling and know you can do the job as well as a contractor. However, if you have no clue what you are doing then you should leave it up to the professionals. This will help to ensure that the job does not end in disaster.
Besides saving you money, hiring a contractor could also save you time. If you do it yourself and have to then go back and correct mistakes, it will take more time then just having it done correctly the first time. Additionally, your contractor will often have crew that will be able to get multiple things done at one time. You may have people to help you, but this still will not be as efficient as having a contractor with a crew doing the job.
Hiring a contractor to do your kitchen remodeling project can be the perfect choice if you are on a budget and concerned about time. Additionally, it will help to ensure that the work is done right and the kitchen ends up just the way you want it. All you will need to do is design a plan and communicate your plan to your contractor. He will take care of making sure it gets done the way you want.

Planning is always a good idea when it comes to home projects, especially if the project has the goal of completing a bookshelf, cabinet, small desk or other furniture item. Woodworking plans are essential for constructing a bathroom cabinet, a headboard for the bed or a shelf to organize all the books scattered about the home. If a homeowner or amateur craftsman has woodworking plans in mind, then those plans should probably be in print as well.
However, the first question to ask might be: What’s in a good plan? Many people have found that commercially available woodworking plans can eliminate the guesswork in a project and provide a solid set of guidelines for completing the wood item successfully. Such a plan should include a list of all the lumber needed by type and quantity, but should also provide a time estimate for completion of the project. The better plans will make suggestions as well, such as steering the beginner toward simpler projects, such as a birdhouse, while other plans will state that they are for someone with more experience.
A complete plan should not only be a pattern for the project, but should also include a list of the hardware and accessories needed. It is essential to know, before starting, the type and number of hinges, drawer pulls etc. required for the project. Good plans give a written description of the materials that will work best and may even suggest where to buy these items.
Some of the best woodworking plans and project plans will include a tool list, to help the craftsman complete the job with the least amount of stress and manual labor. The best plans will not assume the individual owns all the necessary tools and will be very thorough when listing the tools and equipment needed. Good plans usually include such details as the type of saw blade needed to make the proper cuts, etc.
Perhaps the key benefit of using good plans is the availability of measurements, clearly printed in black and white. For example, a particular type of bed frame plan should indicate clearly how wide individual headboard drawers, cabinets or sliding doors should be so that the overall measurements are exact. Generally, the person writing the plan, whether it is purchased or available free, has completed the project two or more times. This means that any small “bugs” and details have been worked out.
How Hard Is It To Read Plans?
This is a good question, one that is often brought up by those with less experience in woodworking. Photographs and line drawings help overcome language barriers, allowing plans to be used in various countries. The best plans illustrate the project step by step. Some of these plans don’t even need extensive written instructions, if the illustrations are complete and clear. In recent years, written directions have been provided in several of the most-used languages. The greatest benefit of good woodworking plans and patterns is this: A beginner doesn’t need to study and become an expert to make the plans work. Woodworking plans, followed carefully, can be surprisingly easy to use.
Good plans will also have a nice photo of the finished item, in addition to ideas for finishing with stain or paint. Some even suggest placement in a particular room or home location. It is quite likely that someone has created a great furniture item previously and has created a plan that will work for anyone else.

Do you have dreams of remodeling your kitchen? You may even have a plan already to make it happen, but oftentimes those dreams and ideas come to a fast half once you see how much a remodeling project can cost regardless of the current size or condition of your kitchen. Fortunately, you do not have to give up your dream of a remodeled kitchen just yet. Remodel pieces rather than complete fixtures can still give your kitchen an entirely new look often at a lower cost.
When we refer to “remodel pieces,” we are suggesting an alternative approach to changing the look of certain components of your kitchen. For instance, instead of tearing out and installing new cabinets, try just changing the doors. Or, rather than repainting all of the kitchen walls, try repainting only one wall or create a mural for one wall which can really change the look to the entire kitchen. Or, relining your cabinets with inexpensive, easy to install drawer liners can help change the look and feel of your kitchen. Remodel pieces such as these, among many others, can help make your remodeling dreams come to fruition without a complete kitchen renovation.
Writing down your ideas before beginning the project is a great way to plan the necessary steps to see the project through to completion and also help prepare a budget. Or, try making a sketch of your kitchen remodeling plans which is another great way to help you stick with your goal. First, decide what you want your kitchen’s overall feel to be. Remodel pieces can then be based around this idea or desired atmosphere to the kitchen. For example, ask yourself if you want your kitchen to have an Oriental feel to it, or perhaps a warm, grandmother-like feel to it.
Remember, you always have the option of changing your mind and heading in a new direction. One advantage to remodel pieces is being more portable and interchangeable than new kitchen cabinets, and also less expensive. For example, if you want the 1800s English feminine feel after one of your favorite books Beatrix Potter’s Jemima Puddle-Duck, you will probably have a lot of geese and duck motifs. But, it’s your kitchen so go ahead and do it.
For a kitchen following the puddle-duck look as above, remodel pieces would imitate what either a duck or Beatrix Potter’s kitchen would look like. Maybe you would have a watery blue-green tile floor with stencils of giant English trees, such as the oak or Hazel, on your walls. Wall hangings might be a soft color and perhaps a tea set displayed on the outside of your cabinets. A metal or simple white counter surface could be changed to a faux wood Formica countertop of your color selection. With these few simple changes, you have now said goodbye to your old kitchen and hello to an entirely new kitchen with just a few simple changes. As you see, a nice, eye-pleasing kitchen does not require a complete renovation. An easy makeover with a few remodel pieces can provide you with the feel of a new kitchen without the extra cost.

We have all known it for a long time, fossil fuels are finite and will run out. Before they run out however, they will become scarce to the extent that using them becomes expensive and prohibitive. This has prompted interest in renewable, indeed abundant, energy resources like solar energy.
Many people may understand why to start using solar power but don’t have the necessary knowledge or information to do this. They think that it will be complicated or expensive. In reality, there are many types of solar systems you can create. some are very simple and some are a bit more complicated. Starting with the simple ones can give you the necessary skills to take on larger projects.
This article will cover the many solar power options open to the homeowner that wants to save on energy bills.
Solar cooker: A solar cooker is a cooking utensil that uses absolutely no fuel for cooking. You can cook food for up to five people in the small box with a bit of organization. If you are thinking that using a solar cooker will reduce your chances of serving up a varied platter on the dining table, you will be surprised to know that you can not only boil food items in the cooker but also roast and bake.
The biggest problem with the solar oven is that it takes time to build up the temperature needed for cooking. And to this extent, it requires the climate to be warm. However it is ideal if you have a bit of time and can save on using the standard cooker.
Solar home lighting: A solar home lighting system converts solar energy into electrical energy for your home. This is done with photovoltaic cells that are convert photons to electrical energy. So, in the night, if you wonder how the lights are on in the house, it is because of the solar energy stored in the solar cells. You can install the solar home lighting system in your house and not worry about the electricity bills anymore.
Solar heating : solar heating can be to keep the house warm or it can be used to heat the water that you use for baths, showers or washing up. solar heating can use an active solar powered system (solar panels) or a passive system that relies on the Suns heat to warm up water. Both systems can save you money on water bills that are often one of the most expensive bills you will get.
Companies providing solar power systems for residential homes make it a point to install aesthetically-pleasing heating systems in your house. As far as expenditure is concerned, investing in a solar heating system can make sense because you get a return on your investment within 3-4 years, giving you absolutely free service after that. You can also get grants and rebates on certain solar systems.

If you have land in Colorado or are planning to buy land for sale, you may want to consider installing a small wind turbine to supply your electricity needs. Wind power is rapidly becoming a popular choice of power for rural area homes. Take time to discover all you can about the wind turbine systems, their capabilities, costs, and savings they can yield to help determine if one is right for you.
Customers who use wind turbines on their Colorado land save money. You can lower your electric bill as much as 90% and many wind turbine consumers pay only $100 annually for their electricity even with a totally electric home. The cost to buy the wind turbine system and the amount of perpetual wind should all be factors to see if this is economically a good choice for you.
A few acres of Colorado land would be a good choice for a small home wind turbine system. Large turbines aren’t alway welcome in some areas and they may be overkill for some sizes of land parcels. Generally a standard home uses less than 10,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. A small wind turbine needs to be 5-15 kilowatts to be cost effective for a home. A vacation or recreational piece of land for sale in Colorado will use less energy than that, so a small turbine should be more than enough for this type of parcel..
There are tax credits and rebates available for wind turbines that you put on Colorado land for sale. The Small Wind Incentive Pilot Program (SWIPP) offer rebates up to $5,000 and the Highline Electric Association, Southeat Colorado Power Association, the Town of Este and the Sangre De Cristo Electric Association, Inc, have joined together with the Colorado Governor’s Energy Office to reduce the costs of the wind turbines and the cost for installation on Colorado land. Buyers of Colorado land for sale are also eligible to receive credit for excess energy that their home wind turbine systems produces.
The Colorado Governor’s Energy Office has partnered with Sangre De Cristo Electric Association Inc., the Highline Electric Association, the Town of Estes and the Southeast Colorado Power Association to reduce the costs of the wind turbines and their installation on Colorado land. You can also be eligible to receive credit for excess energy that their home wind turbine systems produces, if they buy Colorado land for sale. In addition you can receive credit for the excess energy produced by your home wind turbine produces on your Colorado land.
Generally a home uses less than 10,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. A recreational or vacation property on Colorado land for sale will use even less; so a small wind turbine should be more than adequate. Larger wind turbines aren’t always highly regarded by neighbors, making a smaller turbine with at least 5-15 kilowatts in size a better choice, still able to handle the electricity load.

Are you inclined to buy a home wind turbine system? You’ll need to do some research to consider if it is a feasible method for you to power your home on Colorado land for sale.

A very important part of any woodworking project is a woodworking plan. These plans can assist you in wood working and scroll saw designs. These can help to improve the style and look of your piece. Good design plans offer informative instructions and illustrations which help to guide you through the complete process. You can either pay for these plans, or you can download them free from the internet. It’s also possible to create your own plan.
Tracking down Plans
If you don’t want to pay for your woodworking patterns then it is possible to find these for free on the internet. The internet is wonderful, you just have to be willing to search it for long enough to find the right plans. You are able to find plans which are suitable for specific projects or just general plans. You can find simple plan designs such as bird feeders, to more extravagant furniture design packages. You can also find a large number of websites that have plans for children’s toys and other items which are decorative. Just use your favorite search engine to search for these plans.
There are also a number of books which you can buy or borrow from a library. Many woodworking magazines will also include a selection of popular woodworking or scrollsaw patterns. It’s a good idea to buy a few different magazines and take the plans out.
If woodworking is fairly new to you then it’s a pretty good idea if you start with a simple design. This will teach you about the techniques and how to read the plans without getting too stressed with complicated design. When you start to learn more you can then move onto more complicated and extravagant projects.
You should make sure you choose good quality plans, these are ones that provide lots of clear information. Try and find plans which have diagrams and pictures so that you know what you should be doing. Consider getting a folder for all of your plans to keep them in one place.
You could either follow the plan exactly as it is written, or you can make some minor alterations. You can quite easily personalize generic plans by changing a few simple steps. You could also consider painting the result of your hard work instead of using a wood stain.
Creating your Own Plans
Once you have practiced with other peoples plans you might want to start creating your own plans. This isn’t as difficult as you might imagine. You should start by sketching out a design and then adding some extra details to it at a later date.
Next you should decide which wood you would like to use to complete your project. You should make sure your measurements are completely accurate so that you order enough wood to complete the project. Also work out the materials which you will need in order to finish the project.
List all of the materials which you will need and the quantities which you will need for your scrollsaw patterns. List everything that you need including paints and stains. Also bear in mind the tools that you need, buy these if you don’t already own them. Take this list out with you when you go shopping so that you are sure to get everything you need.

From water, chlorine’s by-products, cysts, chlorine, lead and volatile organic chemicals can be cleaned out with the help of a Countertop filter. So that clean tap water can be obtained, the faucet aerator can be replaced with the diverter valve of the counter tap water filter. So, a Countertop filter can be attached with a faucet by using the diverter valve that is available along with it. Drinking water can be made available through taps, in this way, by easily installing a Countertop filter. Such water is safe and tastes good as well.
Magnesium, potassium and calcium are the minerals in water that are beneficial for health and taste good as well. These are not removed from the water by counter top water filters, even as the harmful substances are. The substances that are at times found in water supplied by municipalities and cause bad odor or taste, like by-products of algae, are also removed by counter top water filters. Savings can also be achieved through the use of counter top water filters, since those who tend to drink only bottled water can replace that with water cleaned by making use of the filter. A decanter can be used for bottling water, in combination with the filter.
The standard aerator i.e. the part where the water comes out from the screen, has to be replaced with a diverter valve, so that a countertop filter can be fitted with the kitchen faucet. The countertop filter provides water for the kitchen faucet in this manner. By pulling the valve handle, water can be diverted via the filter, so that dishes can be washed in the sink or water can be obtained for drinking. If a pull-out sprayer type of faucet is in use, fitting of a countertop filter may not be possible, however.
Regarding the water filter’s placement at the faucet, there are different countertop filters available in the market, with different designs. A design that makes the output of water available at the water filter’s housing and a design that makes the output of water available at the kitchen faucet are among these. Before a purchase is made and before the most appropriate design choice is decided upon, a careful analysis of his or her needs can be carried out by the customer.
The countertop filter that is in use should, in a dependable manner, remove contaminants from the water. The time that an individual is able to spare from his or her lifestyle is also a factor upon which the kind of water filter in use may depend. Relatively maintenance free countertop filters may be sought to be acquired by those who find themselves hard-pressed for time.
The products that have a carbon granule filter do not require cartridge replacements, in order to continue operations. However, those who have such filters may not be able to benefit from technological advances, especially in terms of the materials that are used for making the cartridges being replaced by more effective ones or in terms of the pore structure of the cartridges being improved and being better-graded.
Moistening of the fibers on account of the water’s passage leads to absorption of contaminants, due to diffusion. Fickian diffusion is used by mechanical filtration. The possibility of mechanical filtration should be available with the use of a Countertop filter. So, certain things should be examined carefully by those who want to buy a Countertop filter, before they purchase it. Relatively maintenance free Countertop Filter are, therefore, likely to benefit the the purchasers, on account of the longer life of the cartridge.
Electrokinetic absorption should also be performed by a counter top water filter, in order to be effective. An electric field is produced by the particles in the water that are unwanted. That field is made use of by a counter top water filter that can carry out electrokinetic absorption. Additionally, physical absorption should be carried out by a good counter top water filter. Micron filtration and ion exchange is carried out by the activated carbon filters in advanced countertop filters.

You should always start with the ceiling and then do the walls next when doing drywall repair. Starting at the top of the wall around the ceiling is best. Then you can move on downward. You want to keep the seams as tight as you can. This will also help to keep you from having to sand too much. You should use something called green board in the areas that are known for moisture. This would be best in the bathroom.
After you have the drywall hung. You need to tape over the joints. You should keep the tape firm and smooth with a good finishing knife. this will be used to smooth out the compound and when it comes to the corners you need to use a corner tool. Make sure that you let it dry for at least twenty four hours.
After it is dry you can then apply the second coat. You should wait another day to put on the third coat and then you can sand it once it has been a day or so. This will give you the best results for the installation and the best looking finish possible.

Times are getting harder. There will always be money problems unless you decide to do something about it. One way to cut down on monthly costs is to lower electricity bill by cutting down on your family?s usage. Aside from saving you money, it could also save the environment.
By making small sacrifices, you can drastically decrease the use of electricity in your home. Thus, you can lower electricity bill successfully. You may not appreciate the help right away, but in the long run the savings you will get will mount to huge amounts.
Follow these simple tips:
1. Open Windows - Use window films instead of blinds or curtains. Summer time is getting hotter and hotter. More people now are using their air conditioner in the most uncomfortable heat and that is usually around noon time. They usually close their curtains or blinds because the heat from the sunlight coming in only makes the heat worse.
Make use of daytime light. The problem with closing your blind during the daytime is the waste of sunlight. You end up turning on lights inside the house and that means using more energy. A perfect solution is to use window film. It allows the light from the sun to come in the house but stops the heat from going in with it. So you end up with a bright cold room.
2. Blankets - Turn off that heater and pile on the blankets. This is a simple and efficient way to give your heater a rest. During cold nights, you can just use more than the normal number of blankets that you use. An extra blanket on your bed is exactly what you need to push back the thermostat a couple of degrees back. This small act can save you thousands of dollars in the long run.
3. Unused Appliances - Unplug unnecessary appliances and electronics. Plugged appliances that are not used will still eat up energy. There are a number of appliances that are left plugged all around the house even though no one is using them. Unplugging these small appliances or electronics will lower your energy usage. Although it might be annoying to keep setting the time on the VCR or DVD player, it is worth the trouble. So unplug to save money, especially if the plugs are not hard to reach.
4. Ref Maintenance - Clean your refrigerator?s coils. The refrigerator is an important appliance in your home. It is also to blame for a huge portion of your electric bill. So if you take care of your refrigerator, you can control your energy usage. When your refrigerator has dirty condenser coils, it has to work harder to keep your food cool. Perform maintenance checks on your refrigerator every 3 months for optimum performance.
5. Auto Lighting - Use motion detectors to lower electricity bill. Forgetting to shut off lights is one of the problems many families face. These forgotten lights can add a lot to the electric bill. You can put them in rooms like the bathroom or garage where people usually forget to turn off the lights when they leave. This can save you a lot of money in the long run.

The majority of your houseplants require year round care, but what indoor gardeners don’t consider is that the level of care provided may need to change with the season. Most houseplants actively grow and bloom in the spring and summer months, which tapers off as fall approaches and often ceases altogether as the winter months take hold.
These growing cycles are predicated on a few different variables. The main one is sunlight and the amount of that valuable resource that is available to them. This naturally lessens in the winter as the days become shorter, and the sky itself becomes more overcast in general. The second is simply continuing on the naturally growing cycle they experienced in the wild, which again was also influenced by the weather. Even though the ‘weather’ and temperature in your house is typically uniform and static no matter the season, this genetic disposition in the plant still holds some sway.
Here’s what you can do to take advantage of their natural growing cycles. Firstly a good fertilizer should be applied near the beginning of spring, as the plants are about to enter their growing spurt even in dry desert landscapes. This needs to be cut back in the summer, and then completely discontinue in the winter. If applied haphazardly, this extra feed can burn out a plant, causing root destruction and the plant’s untimely demise.
Watering habits should follow this same trend. In the spring and summer with the weather warmer and dryer, your plants will need more water to get by. Like with fertilizer though, an excess of water can also be harmful to your plants, so you need to cut back during the cooler months when your plants need, and can handle less sustenance.
Water not only helps with growth, but also works to keep the leaves and roots cool during those hot days. It can also be a good idea to lightly mist the leaves of your plants on hot days with a water bottle to further help in that regard.
Overwatering plants is the most common poor habit that indoor gardeners have, and this is magnified in winter, when plants can’t handle and digest as much water as they can in the summer. Always remember that no matter the unchanging conditions in your house, your indoor plant does change throughout the seasons based its own internal clock, and that you need to change with it.
Of course each plant species may require a slightly different approach, and in fact there are some houseplants that may work on a completely opposite routine. These are general rules that work with most houseplants, but be sure to take the time to familiarize yourself with each individual plant you own and discover any particular quirks it may have.

Do you want to live in a way that protects thefuture of our children? Do you wish to live in the greenest world possible with a conscience, respect and appreciation for the environment?
Most Americans have a strong sense of social and environmental responsibility. We attempt to make environmentally wise choices in all aspects of our daily living, yet we ignore one of the major contributors to the plight of the planet.
Worldwide in excess of one billion people do not have an uncontaminated source of clean drinking water, this is in excess of 1/6 of the world population, yet we, as Americans, spend billions of dollars yearly for the convenience of drinking from a plastic bottle instead of a water tap. Shame on us.
1.5 million tons of plastic are used to manufacture bottled water every year. It also takes in excess of 25 times the amount of water to make each plastic bottle than the bottle contains. 300 million gallons of bottled water are imported to the United States yearly.
In America bottled water is often simply an indulgence. Despite our justifications, it is not a harmless indulgence. Bottled water is an environmental catastrophe. Thirty years ago bottled water barely survived as a business in the United States. Today Americans spent more on “designer” bottled water than we spent on iPods or entertainment tickets - $15 billion in 2007. The expected United States expenditure for bottled water will be $16 billion a year before the end of the decade.
As a country we consume more than 30 billion single-serving bottles of water per year. Bottled water is the fastest growing beverage industry in the world, worth up to $22 billion a year. Less than 15% of plastic bottles are recycled, the rest end up in the refuse systems and cost America’s cities over 70 million per year to handle clean up and landfill expenditures. America yearly produces in excess of 800,000 tons of plastic bottle pollution that substantially magnifies global warming.
Last year, Americans threw away 38 billion plastic water bottles, about $1 billion worth of plastic. That’s an overwhelming waste, especially considering 1.5 million barrels of oil - enough to power 100,000 cars for a year - were consumed to manufacture these bottles. And that’s not even including the oil and gas required for shipping and delivering this massive volume of liquid.
If you are putting money into bottled water, you are basically purchasing plastic, which is manufactured from petroleum. When we buy a bottle of water, what we’re often purchasing is the bottle its self. One of the main problems with bottled water production is the reliance on fossil fuels. From packaging to transportation, bottled water relies on oil, using 17 million barrels of oil and producing massive amounts of carbon dioxide every year.
In the United States alone, we are hauling 1 billion liters of water around a week in trains, trucks, railcars and ships. That adds up to a weekly giant convoy equivalent to 37,800 18-wheelers. Water weighs over 8 pounds a gallon. Water is so very heavy you cannot fill an 18 wheeler with bottled water, you have to allow empty space.
There is an simple eco friendly solution. Tap water is considerably less expensive. As an investigative reporter for the NY Times points out, almost all municipal water in America is so good that nobody needs to import a single bottle from Italy or France or the Fiji Islands.
Clean and pure drinking water should be public and inexpensive. The more the wealthy opt out of drinking tap water, the less political support and funds there will be for investing in developing, maintaining and repairing America’s public water supply. That would be a dreadful loss.
Availability of inexpensive, pure water is basic to a countrys health. In Fiji, a state-of-the-art factory spins out more than a million bottles a day of the hippest bottled water on the American market, yet more than half the people in Fiji do not have a pure or dependable source of drinking water. This means it is easier for an American in Dallas or Boston to quench their thirst with refreshing Fiji water than it is for the majority of people in Fiji.
Should you elect to get your suggested eight to ten glasses a day from bottled water, you may spend up to $1,500 or more every year. An equal amount of tap water would cost pennies a day. Recent studies show that many brands of bottled water fail to meet industry guidelines and the cost of even poor quality bottled water can grow quite high.
Much of bottled water is only plain tap water. Many bottled water firms repackage tap water into plastic bottles, then sell them back to the consumer at prices higher than gasoline and increasing just as rapidly. Aquafina, as an example, has finally been pressured into amending its labels to advise consumers that Aquafina water comes from tap water. Why not just drink tap water? More than a quarter of bottled water is just processed tap water.
Plastic containers poisonous toxic chemicals. Have you considered why your plastic bottle of water has added a label warning telling you not to reuse it? The longer you continue to use that bottle, the more likely it is to leach toxic chemicals into your drinking water.
There is a to solve the dilemma. If you are unsure of your local water supply or wish to easily filter tap water when on the go, carbon-filtered tap water is safer and costs much less than bottled water. As reported by the Environmental Working Group, carbon filtration of tap water will dramatically lower levels of toxic by products; it is also 10 to 20 times less expensive than bottled water, and does not produce the waste and pollution associated with the packaging and transport of bottled water.
A portable water filter is a perfect solution for water filtration on the go. A portable water filter allows anyone to filter their own water, no matter where they travel; across town or around the world. A portable water filter allows you to free yourself from any unpleasant taste, additives or contaminates while protecting the environment and your pocketbook. Get the whole family involved. A five member family could save well over $7,500.00 a year.
Stop being unwitting victims of manipulative advertising. When a entire industry is built up by overwhelming us with a product we do not need, when an entire industry is based on packaging and presentation, not the product, it is worth asking how that happened and what the future impact is upon our precious planet.

Many people are electing to avoid the risk of chemical contamination of their bodies, families and homes. Fortunately, solutions for addressing change exist and are readily available. Choosing eco-friendly products allows us to live a natural, green lifestyle.
The benefits of organic bedding, choosing organic foods and wearing organic apparel are numerous.
Organic Foods
The Organic Food Association tells us: It iss common sense; organic food is good food. Good to eat, good for the environment, good for the small scale farmers and farm workers who grow it.
Organic farming is all about health and wellness. In order to assure optimum health and resistance against diseases, the natural balance in our own bodies and in the environment must be maintained. The use of artificial fungicides, chemical pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and genetic engineering interfere with this delicate balance; with unknown and often harmful consequences! Organic farming affects more than what can be tasted or seen.
Over the previous fifty years, commercial farmers have, of necessity, continued to increase the amount of these hazardous applications. Cereal crops are sprayed as many as 8 times during the growing season. Many fruit and vegetable harvests have been sprayed 10 to 15 times. Following the harvest the spraying process is repeated to prevent grow of bacteria during storage and transport. Excessive spraying of fruit and vegetable crops destroys natural bacteria, leaving the plants increasingly vulnerable to attack from unwelcome pests or disease. More insecticides and fungicides are then required to fight off infestation and decay. However, these pests rather quickly become immune to the chemicals applied and their population rapidly grows. More powerful and increasingly toxic chemicals are then required to contain the infestation.
Organic certification is the consumers assurance that products have met stringent standards and have been grown and processed according to strict procedures without contamination from carcinogenic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, human waste or sewage sludge and that they were processed without ionizing radiation or artificial food additives. Organic or non organic, which would you rather put in your body? We are what we eat. When our diet is built upon natural organic choices we are providing our bodies optimum food, produced in optimum conditions. Organically raised vegetables and fruit provide more minerals and nutrients than commercially grown produce and are more intensely endowed with flavor, color and aroma; they just taste better!
Organic meat is the only meat that guarantees that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have not been used at any stage of growth production. Certified organic meats are produced from animals that have been reared humanely and feed on certified organic pastures and feeds
Organics And The Environment
The USDA estimates that within the next ten years over half of all Americas farm products will come from only 1% of the farms. The EPA also states that commercial agriculture is accountable for 70% of the pollution in our country’s rivers and streams. Small scale organic farmers finance innovative and far reaching research designed to reduce agricultures impact on the environment. They maintain bio diversity by planting heirloom varieties of plants and gleaning seeds for future crops. The loss of a substanial variety of species is one of the worlds most pressing environmental concerns. The good news is that many organic farmers and gardeners have been harvesting, preserving seeds and growing unusual and unique varieties for decades.
Organic farming methods naturally enrich the soil with manure and compost. Well balanced soils product healthy, strong plants, nourishing for both people and animals. Organic agriculture can be a lifeline for small farms as it offers an alternative market where sellers can receive fair and equatable prices for their crops. Organic farming may be one of the last ways to assure the survival of both our ecosystems and our rural farming communities .
Conventional farming practices endanger workers and their families. Scientific research confirms pesticide related health problems which include cancer, birth defects, memory loss, paralysis and death. Unsecured storage, improper application methods and unsafe handling and transportation procedures are not at all uncommon and often lead to tragic mishaps. As pests develop resistance, farmers desperate to maintain or increase crop yields often resort to repeated applications of expensive and stronger chemical products. Faced with increasing costs, depleted fields and contaminated ground water, several small farmers have been forced to abandon their livelihood.
Organic farming is safer and healthier for farm workers, but also promotes just compensation in the supply chain. Organic farming provides a viable and socially acceptable alternative to large-scale farming and the accompanying dependence on government crop subsidies. Support of the small organic farmer supports Americas economy.
Organic production substantially reduces health risks. Many EPA-approved pesticides were registered and approved prior to extensive research that linked these hazarous chemicals to cancer and other significant medical problems. Crop dusting has often resulted in drifts of toxic pesticides and herbicides from fields to residential areas.
Organic agriculture is one of the best ways to prevent more of these chemicals from contaminating the ecosystem. An increasing body of research indicates that chemical contaminants are considerably more prevalent in the foods we eat, in our bodies and in the environment than we previously believed.
By choosing organic products we lessen this toxic burden. Organic farmers rotate crops and plant soil enriching cover crops to control weeds, nutrient leaching and erosion. Soil is the foundation of the food chain. The point of organic farming is to use methods that build and maintain healthy and sustainable soils.
Organic Skin Care And Personal Products
Skin care and cosmetics are the least regulated products under the US Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Whether it is soap, moisturizers or deodorants, skin care products are an essential part of daily life. Do we really understand what these products actually contain and what we are forcing our skin to absorb?
Have you ever suffered from burning, stinging or itchy skin? it is likely your skin absorbed irritants and toxins from your skin care products. The skin absorbs ingredients in all the personal care products that come in contact with our skin. Consider nicotine or HRT patches. They rely totally on skin absorption.
As parents we are concerned for the well being of our children. We tenderly comfort and bathe them with a wide range of products. These include soaps, shampoos, creams and lotions, many of which are applied to babys delicate skin several times a day. The skin is the largest organ of the body and the skin of an infant can be up to 100 times more sensitive and receptive to toxic chemicals and irritating ingredients that the skin of an adult.
Without even realizing, mothers put their babies at risk daily. Did you know that applying powder to your babys skin may pose a cancer risk later in life? The principle ingredient in many baby powders is talc, which several medical studies have confirmed as a known carcinogenic.
Lanolin is a featured ingredient in many skin care products. When processed from organically raised sheep, lanolin is a wonderful healing balm. The danger lies in non organic lanolin that has been acquired from sheep that were dipped or sprayed for lice with chemical pesticides that are contaminated with carcinogenic ingredients such as DDT, dieldrin or lindane. The residue of these toxic chemicals remains in the processed lanolin and can cause severe reactions and long lasting health concerns.
Chemical free and all natural, organic products offer eco-friendly options that eliminate these dangers. You can avoid these and similar safely risks by using only certified organic products formulated from natural sources such as plants, fruits, vegetables and flowers. These products to do not contain synthetic chemicals such as lauryl sulphate, phthales, parabens, artificial fragrances or dyes.
Organic Textiles
By the end of 2008, the sale of organic textiles worldwide is expected to exceed $3 billion. Global demand for organic textiles is increasing in response to consumer demand. Organic production takes additional time, requires more skills and knowledge and costs somewhat more. But it is worth it. Organic materials do not bear hidden costs to the environment.
Choose Eco Wise Products! Choose Organic!
The consumption and use of green technologies is all about the challenges and choices we face if we are to continue to enjoy a high quality of life within the finite resources of our planet. If we become passionate about sustainability, together we can help make the planet a cleaner and healthier place for all of us to live.
Do you want to embrace a lifestyle that protects our childrens future? Do you desire to to live in the greenest environment possible with a conscience and respect and appreciation for the earth that sustains us? The quality of life for decades ahead is dependent on the choices we make today!
Polls reflect that about a fourth of the US adult population has a profound sense of environmental enlightenment and social responsibility. Almost half of us will buy organic and make earth friendly choices in many aspects of our daily living. Consumer awareness and education are a powerful force for change.
The consumption of organically raised products has grown by 20 per cent in the last year alone. Organic alternatives are readily available and the trend is escalating. Sustainability should be within everyones reach. Our choices matter and have a long term global impact. Let us decide to choose wisely!

If you know a bit about green lawn care, you can enjoy a long, healthy lawn life that is beautiful. The fact is that to have a great looking lawn, you need to know the tips and tricks of maintaining it and that takes some work and education. Yet, you can have a lush, green lawn that looks amazing. To make this happen, you need to consider the various tips and techniques that can make it happen. The good news is that this also helps you to enjoy caring for your lawn as well.
A Few Things To Keep In Mind
The way that you mow your lawn is one of the most important things to keep in mind. The mow height is important and should be maintained at 2.5 inches. Mowing too low will cause a weakening of the grass root system which causes weeds to grow there. This weakening allows weeds to grow much easier.
Patterns Matter
Another element to consider is the direction that you cut in. Always try to change the pattern each time that you mow. Instead of going in the same direction each time, this will allow you to cut into the leaf surface of those dreaded weeds that are leaning in one way. In addition, doing this also helps to keep your soil from being compact. It improves the turf wear too.
Your Blades
Another thing to consider with lawn care is your mower blade. The blades need to be sharp. To have them sharpened; take the lawnmower in to the professionals at the beginning of the season to have the work done. By doing this every year it will help provide your lawn with a great growing pattern all year long.
Watering
Just as important in lawn care is the way that you water. When you water, water infrequently and be sure to water a long time so that it is deep and helps to develop deep roots. Measure the local rainfall and be sure to water at the same level so that your grass gets the water it needs without being overly saturated.
Pest Control
Yet another lawn care requirement is to monitor for pests. If you believe you have turf diseases, you may be mistaking things like dog urine and fertilizer burns for a pest problem. Have a professional handle the right treatment method for these troublesome creatures.
Using these lawn care tips, you will improve the quality of your lawn and enjoy an easy care program at the same time.

If you are fascinated with blueprints there are many great interior planning classes that can be taken over the internet, from the mail, or at your local school. Selecting the right interior design classes for you may be difficult though. These tips may assist you sort to out the particulars in finding the top lessons for yourself.
Accreditation For you the primary rung on the ladder may be to find a good quality design course and to make sure that the classes you are concerned with are federally accredited in a well-recognized school. This is an imperative because it speaks to the excellence of the program, as well as making it possible for financial assistance or loans from various government and other sources. In fact, many grants and loans, such as a Pell Grant, will not even think about submission that is for non-accredited institutions.
How do you find out if a lesson is accredited? You may write, telephone, go on-line to the various addresses, or visit the student affairs office of the institution, or you could speak with a representative. If the institution acts as if they do not know what you are speaking about, give them a pass for a better school.
The Benefits of Alternative Learning While many individuals think of returning to formal classes. You may be considering returning to learn about interior design, and think that you have to go back into a brick and cement school building. Nowadays, there are a lot of alternatives. You may decide that you want flex-schedules for learning or that you will do better studying at home. Many interior design courses are offered by mail or over the internet. A good number of classes let you learn at your own speed and on your own time. This stretchy education fashion is wonderful for folks with permanent work, little babies, or poor relations who require regular attention. The undergraduate is capable to learn and total work at whatever time they find a few extra minuets. These kind of lessons are also great for mature persons who do not feel like sharing a class with students fresh out of high school.
Course Material Previous to putting your signature on any formalities, get as much material as you can about the program you are going to take. Should some of the your training be practical and applied, ask about what kind of coursework is typical in that institution. A great deal of this material aught to be found readily available to new students, but if you find that you have trouble getting answers, then you should try to speak with a teachers. Will you be learning how to make draperies or just hot to make it match? A good number of teachers are really interested in their work and are usually grateful for the opportunity to talk with likely interior design students.

Are you remodeling your home or redecorating a room? Wainscoting can add the decorative and protective quality you?re looking for. What is wainscoting and why should you consider it? Here is a brief history and some reasons why it is so popular.
Wainscoting is a material that is attached to the bottom portion of a wall throughout a room. The traditional material is wood (or faux wood) but today it comes in a variety of materials and textures. These include marble, stone, tile, fabric and plastic that is meant to look like other materials, e.g. stone, wood and marble. Some have even gotten creative and used old door and window frames. The panels are installed between the baseboard and the chair rail which is at the approximate height of the back of a chair (between 48 and 54 inches from the floor).
Installing a wainscot got its popularity in the mid nineteenth century and was commonly made from the wood of wagons. These panels were installed vertically in a tongue and groove fashion and were originally meant to hide wall joints. In the 1900?s, higher (about 60 inches) fabric wainscoting was popular in formal areas such as dining rooms. The fabric used varied but they were generally rich in color and some had intricate patterns. The panels were separated by thick molding to add elegance and show craftsmanship.
Due to wainscoting?s rich history, using it adds an element of the past and touches of elegance to any room. In a new home that can appear sterile, it can add warmth and beauty.
Wainscoting isn?t just for aesthetic purposes but is also durable and can help protect your walls. Children and pets can easily leave marks on walls but with wainscoting, those marks will easily wash off. When chairs slide and hit the wall they usually leave a mark over time but with wainscot the wall is protected. If you have an older home then moisture can build on your walls due to lower standards of constructions. Wainscoting will help protect your walls.
It can also serve to flatten a warped wall or uneven drywall. Wainscoting can also cover up a water stain or other damage. If you have plaster walls then it can hide cracks and prevent new ones from forming.
Wainscoting is surprisingly inexpensive. Depending on the material you use, it should only set you back a few hundred dollars. The installation is not too difficult either. Tongue and grove makes it easy and the finished project looks professional. Some even come precut so there is no guesswork involved.
So if you?re planning on redecorating or remodeling, consider using wainscoting. It?s not only decorative and protects your walls but it?s inexpensive and easy to install.

When it comes to remodeling a kitchen there are many ways to give the kitchen a whole new look. Moving things around and changing up the floor plan can be a great way to remodel a kitchen. You do not have to stick with the original design. Have fun and be creative with the kitchen remodel to allow for a completely new look once your kitchen is finished.
An extensive remodeling project can be a huge task, but you can help to make it worth while by changing the design of your kitchen. Just because something has been in one place does not mean it must stay there. Additionally, just because your kitchen does not have something does not mean it can’t be added. You should take a look at magazines and websites for kitchen ideas that can help you to create a design that is good for you. You can refinish or create new kitchen cabinets, like in an unused corner. You can move about the stove, refrigerator and other appliances to give the room a whole new look. You may even consider adding in a island which is both functional and can add to the look of the room. It adds counter and storage space to the kitchen, which is a really nice addition. You can also move things around to make the kitchen larger and give you more space to move about.
You can add in new elements to your kitchen, too. Change colors and themes. Try something new and different. You may want to give open cabinets a try or go with glass front cabinets. You might want to add in some more storage. Try to think of ways you can change your kitchen to make it better. This will really help you to get the most out of your remodeling project. You really should think outside of the box. You should just not go with what you have, especially if it isn’t working for you. Change what you do not like and keep what you do like. Do what you want since you are spending the money on it.
A kitchen remodeling project should not just be about updating. It should be about improving the function and design of the kitchen, too. You want to create a kitchen that you really like. If you are spending the money and taking the time to remodel then you should do it right. You need to allow changes that can make your kitchen into your dream kitchen.
Additionally, just because your kitchen does not have something does not mean it can’t be added. You should take a look at magazines and websites for kitchen ideas that can help you to create a design that is good for you. You can move about the stove, refrigerator and other appliances to give the room a whole new look. You may even consider adding in a island which is both functional and can add to the look of the room.
